Just Desert A story by Eric Raynis
“Run!” yelled Kyle.
Eliza hesitated, she never planed for this to happen the only reason she was in the small cottage in the forest was to stop her brother Kyle . . . she failed.
“Come on, Hurry!” yelled Kyle who was already a few meters ahead of her.
Kyle was a fast runner but even with the head start Eliza was faster and even though usually she was only a few seconds slower, she’s now much faster because she’s very scared.
Their home was about two miles away from that cottage in the wood and they had already run a mile and a half before the oddly dressed woman gave up. Eliza saw that before the woman turned around she murmured something under her breathe and then left. They began to slow down and they started talking. “Did you get your soccer ball back?” she asked.
“Yup . . . It’s in my bag,” he answered while trying to catch his breath. “Wow . . . Your fast . . . I never knew.”
Eliza ignored the comment about her running and realized that something was wrong with Kyle’s bag. “If you put your soccer ball in your bag then wouldn’t that make your bag bulkier?” she asked.
“Well duh,” he said. A few seconds later he realized what Eliza ment, he quickly turned around and took off his backpack. “Oh great the knife I picked up with it dug a hole in it,” he said with a hit of sorrow because the soccer ball that his dad bought him about four years ago was now of no use.
“Wait,” she said. “Why did you pick up a knife?”
~ 1 ~
“Well . . . I honestly don’t know, it was . . . was glowing, it actually still is,” he told her as he pulled out a oddly shaped knife that had a very odd green glow, and at the exact time that he pulled out the knife a loud bang of thunder was herd and lightning followed. “Whoa, we should keep going It looks like it’s going to rain,” he said.
“Looks like? It already is,” she told him as the heavy down pour began, witch signalled more thunder and lighting. Once again they started running. Their house was only two minuets away but the rain had made there clothes very damp and muddy.
“Were have you two been!? Your mother has been worried sick!” said Natalie - there housekeeper - in a slightly raised voice.
“Sorry, me and Eliza were playing soccer down near the forest,” Kyle lied.
“Sure,” Natalie said sarcastically. “Where’s the ball then?”
“Well that’s the thing . . . –’’ Kyle began.
“We lost it, it went over the fence to Mrs. Walters house and she wasn’t home so were going to go tomorrow to get it,” Eliza quickly finished.
“Hrmm fine I guess I’ll have to believe you two,” she said but they could tell that she was still not sure. “Oh and before you go up stairs your mother and little brother are out looking for you in town.”
“Ok, Thank you,” said Eliza.
“Goodnight,” said Kyle.
Kyle and Eliza went to their rooms on the third floor and changed to there pj’s and Eliza went out to terrace that connected her and Kyle’s rooms. She stood there thinking over what happened that day.
“Hey,” said Kyle as he came out of his room holding the glowing knife.
~ 2 ~
“What’s with that knife?” she asked.
“I don’t know,” he said putting the knife on the edge of the terrace.
“Well it doesn’t matter right know,” she said. “Well I’m pretty tired so Goodnight Kyle.”
When she turned around her hand accidentally knocked the knife off the terrace and as soon as she saw this she spun around and looked over the terrace to see if it had hit anyone. Luckily the knife had landed in the pumpkin that was placed for Halloween. Eliza told Kyle that she’d get it tomorrow morning and went to her bed and fell fast asleep. That night she dreamt of a horrible possin that infected her body, and that she suffered a horrible fate of death. And some where in here dream she heard Snip Snip Snip but she thought nothing of this for her dream was far to frightening.
~oOo~
She woke up that very same night to the smell of smoke she quickly realized that there was a fire through out the house and it had reached her room. At first she thought it was just her dream, but then after rubbing her eyes she realized it very real. The flames grew more intense Eliza began to sweat from the burning heat. She made her way to the door covering her mouth with a piece of fabric she ripped off her bed. She turned the door knob it was warm, not to hot, but it still burned her hand she tried to push the door open it didn’t work. She pushed even harder it still didn’t work. Then with all the strength in her body she pushed the door again it swung open, but outside her room the fire was even bigger and when she opened her door the flames grew even larger. She slammed the door shut and was once again trapped in her room as she thought of what to do, the only other exit was the terrace, and she ran and opened the door. Kyle was already outside going through the emergency kit that was in his room.
“I found a fire escape ladder!” he yelled.
~ 3 ~
“Okay let’s go!” Eliza yelled back.
They climbed down the ladder and they made it down. A few seconds later Natalie came bursting through the front door with a shocked expression on her face. “Your . . . Your mother she’s . . . she’s dead!” she exclaimed but as she said this she fell to the floor. Kyle went up to her and checked if she was dead or not. But Eliza already knew that she was.
Something took over Eliza she grabbed the pumpkin – witch was now glowing – and the knife (witch wasn’t anymore.) And began to run away with Kyle to escape the burning mansion. They ran about a mile away and then stopped. Kyle noticed that there was something wrong with Eliza because her pupils were tiny and she was in a trance like way. But soon enough she got out of it and regained herself.
“What happened to your hair?” Kyle asked.
“What?” she said as she went up to a puddle to see her reflection. Luckily there was a full moon so there was enough light to see that her long flowing black hair was know very short. “I guess Eric was still mad I broke his computer last week.”
“Well that was nice of him,” he said in a sad tone knowing that Eric had died too.
Once again something took over Eliza and she got up and went toward the pumpkin.
“Eliza what are you doing?” asked Kyle.
Eliza didn’t answer she took the knife out of the pumpkin. As she lowered the knife and it grew even brighter, she had sliced the pumpkin open. As she did this she regained herself once again and her nightmare took place. A horrid possin seeped out of the pumpkin and on to her hand. The possin burned through her flesh in a matter of seconds and entered her blood stream. The pain was excruciating and after five minuets of what seemed like a never ending pain . . .she died.
~ 4 ~
And as for Kyle he too has a pain, but this kind will never end for he is haunted everyday knowing that his beloved sister’s death was his entire fault. In fact his entries family’s death was his fault. He also is doomed with never ending sorrow for he had watched Eliza die experiencing a pain like no other, and he could do nothing to help.
