Chapter 1

Discovery

Ellie slammed the front door as she entered the house. The maze of boxes made a maddening path for her to get to the kitchen. She sighed. Her fourth day at the new school and still she hadn't made any friends. She made herself a poptart and sat down at the table. She had hardly any room to place her plate on the cluttered table. She never wanted to come here. She was so angry at her parents for bringing her here and still wasn't talking to them, even after they bought her some new trainers as a sorry present. Her parents were still at work- she would have the house to herself for an hour and a half. She loved this. Though she was never quite alone.

Annie walked gracefully into the kitchen "Look at this mess!" she cried " You'd think they would have cleared up by now!" "Its only the fourth day Ann, thats basically not being here at all, right?" Ellie replied. "Friend problems?" Annie said gently. "Yeah." "You can't rush things Ell." "But four days! I know why it is though- everyone in my class has a different talent, there's Jenny who's amazing at ballet, Tom does basketball, Lisa has the best voice ever and what have i got? NOTHING!" "Everyone has something Ell. Your talent is just hidden. We just need to find it.." "That sounds like a plan to me." Ellie grinned. "What are you thinking?" Suddenly Annie faded away and Ellie's smile disappeared. She could only keep Annie there for a while mostly, sometimes if she was lucky she could keep Annie for hours but today was not a lucky day. Annie was her grandmother and the only person in the whole world who really understood her. She died 3 years ago from a heart attack. Ever since then Ellie kept her in her heart and mind but she would never forget her anyway even if she tried.

A loud ping from the other side of the room interrupted Ellie's thoughts and as she looked over she realised it was from the ancient computer that had been with her family for years. Ellie grumbled and walked over. It was so unfair! All her friends in her old school had macbooks or their own touchscreen, speedy laptops. It took about ten minutes for it to turn on and when it did Ellie realised that nobody had been on this computer for months, years even! Dad occasionally used it for work but it was so slow he usually went down to the library. A strange feeling came over Ellie as she found that the ping was an email - who would be emailing now? She opened it and a bright poster popped up. There was a short story competition. At first Ellie grabbed the mouse to pull it into the trash but then another though crossed her mind. What if this was it? Her secret talent?! She had to give it a go!

She joined a website quickly and started to type about a boy called Jack. After a few minutes she realised she was great at it and never had to stop to think. Annie reapeared and was surprised to see Ellie sitting on the edge of the old chair typing so fast she couldn't see her fingers moving! "Ellie?" Annie enquired. Ellie jumped at the sound but gave a big smile to see it was Annie. "Guess what! I found my talent! It's writing!"

Chapter two

The competition

Ellie woke early on Saturday morning. She got washed and dressed then did some writing exercises that Annie had mentioned. Then she got straight to work. By 12pm she had finished and was just finetuning it when her mum burst into the room. "Oh good! your dressed! Come on Ellie! Me and dad are taking you on a treat! We are going to see cousin Jane and baby Tilly! Let's go!" "erm ... ok mum. Let me just finish something and i will come down." Ellie replied still tapping away at the computer  "Oh no, I know what your like - you will get distartcted mark my words. Come on!" Her mum grabbed Ellie and pulled her excitedly to the car. "Wait mum!" But it was too late - before she knew it she was sitting in the car with dad driving along. This was a disaster! The story was due in 6pm. She just hoped she could send it in time.

5:30pm. 5:37pm. 5:44pm. 5:50pm. Finally they drove up to the house. 5:53pm. Ellie raced out the car and waited by the front door hopping around impatiently. Her mum slowly walked up and fumbled with her keys. Ellie glanced at her watch. 5:55pm. She urged her mum to hurry up but her mum was complaining how dark it was. Ellie gave out a little squel as it turned to 5:56 and grabbed the keys from her mum. She unlocked the door in a flash and shot into the house. "Shoes!" Dad called to her. She groaned and undid her boots quickly, pulling them off so fast they flew across the room. 5:58. She ran into the kitchen onto the computer and found her story.5:59. She linked it to the address and SEND. 6:00pm. She sighed heavily with relief and laughed. She did it!

Ellie opened her eyes and rolled over lazily in bed. Then remembering the book she flew to the kitchen and logged herself on the computer. PING! She read the email desperately.   Dear Sir or Madam.

Ellie screamed with joy. She did it!!! She won! The next day at school everyone had heard. Lisa asked Ellie to sit with her at lunch and Tom told her she was really clever. More and more people started to become friends with her over the weeks and soon she didn't feel new anymore. She felt normal.

May came and it was the short story final. Ellie knew what she was going to write about. She sat on the old chair and waited for the computer to turn on. She logged herself in and started to type:
