Australian War Bride
A teenage girl in heat of day
Did chores and tasks in dusty light
Her mother's daughter in all ways
She watched the Southern Cross at night.
The washer-woman's daughter fair
Her eyes alit on a young man
In military uniform
Of navy from a far off land.
As War the Second raged around
Each shore leave came he to her side
Her heart to him the only sound
He asked if she would be his bride.
With one swift word, her life she changed
She took his name, his heart, his hand
She rode upon the butterfly
Which brought her safely to his land.
