I was tasked with writing a speech for friend's wedding. It went over moderately well, so I thought I'd share it here.

Love.

It’s a funny little word, isn’t it? Thrown about so nonchalantly. “I love these fries!” Or “I love your shoes!” Or “I love lamp!!!” For such a small word, though, I can think of nothing in the English language with so much power, so much force in its meaning. Love alone can move mountains, and love alone can change the world.

And love, ultimately, is what brings us all here today. Two people coming together, and saying “I love you.”

“I love you” isn’t just one of those throw-away lines. A simple sentence to end a phone call can change a persons world for a day. An “I love you” over dinner can move mountains off of a persons shoulders. To be loved, to feel it, to know it’s waiting for you at home… That is what life is all about.

Now, I’ve tried to find a song lyric or a movie quote to tie this all together. I can’t. Nothing seems to adequately, accurately describe what love is. That’s part of the human condition, I suppose It’s been written about, talked about, sang about since we’ve had coherent thought. Love is just that, love. You can spend your whole life trying to explain it, but you know it the second you feel it. Your world has become all the brighter, and those mountains of life seem somehow smaller.

Love.

Such an important, powerful, funny little word.
