What changed and when- part two.
A lot had changed since that day nearly two months ago when I’d slapped Danny, me especially. I had decided I needed to get a grip of myself and to stop hiding as I had been for all those years. I had to admit to myself finally that I was destroying myself slowly by hiding so no more.
I walked into the school building from second last class in the other building as I had done many times. The main difference was that my head was held high and I was no longer watching the floor. My now black hair was straightened and hung past my shoulders my fringe sweeping my eyes. My usually pale face had on the hint of make up. My brown eyes were enhanced by the carefully applied eyeliner that made them look huge and chocolate coloured in my face.
My black pumps were comfy but stylish, my grey skirt shorter than before and the grey cardigan better fitting and smaller than before. I’d persuaded mum to buy me a new one. She was thrilled by the change in me. She’d always wanted a girly-girl daughter. Even if I dressed better my grades were still high and I still read constantly but I was so much happier in the new me than I ever dreamed possible.
I smiled as I spotted Lola standing by my locker door. Her answering smile was brilliant and I felt a burst of happiness. I’d made so many new friends now that I’d come out of my box and wasn’t being bothered. I opened my locker and slammed my books into it.
“You ready for P.E” she asked. I groaned in response and turned my head so she could see my eyes rolling in my head. She laughed and linked my arm as I shut the locker. “It’s not that bad.”
“You don’t have Danny as your partner though do you?” I asked her as we started down the hall. She was in music which was beside the sports hall.
“No.” she sighed, “But I’d like to.” I laughed and waved bye to her as I reached the changing rooms.
I chatted with other girls in my class as I got changed quickly. I walked into the sports hall while chatting to Anna, a small red head in my form class. She was always nice to me and I genuinely liked her.
The teacher came in with a loud bang as the hall doors swung to hit the wall. I smiled gently and ran to find a place as she blew the whistle around her neck.
“Right ladies and gents, who will be taking the class today?” she shouted to us. Not crossly but she just didn’t think we could hear her. I caught Anna’s eye and we both had to look away before we burst out laughing. I was still smiling when she said, “Danny and Lisa, your turn.”
My jaw dropped. Shit! I forgot all about this. I thought she had as well I mean it’s been nearly two months. Danny and I hadn’t planned anything at all seeing how we weren’t exactly on speaking terms right now.
I walked to the front of the hall and stood in front of the teacher waiting while she ordered the rest of the class to do their warm ups. I grabbed the go-go from around my wrist and bundled my hair into a ponytail.
“So, what are you two doing?” the teacher asked us.
“Don’t know, Miss.” I said quietly with a shrug.
“Why not? You’ve had nearly two months. What have you both been doing?”
The class had stopped doing there warm ups and were now watching what was going on at the front. I looked at Danny but he had his head turned away from me. No help there then. I sighed and turned my gaze back to the teacher.
“We haven’t exactly been speaking Miss.” I told her calmly.
“Why on earth not?”
“No reason. Danny here just thought it would be funny to place a bet on me that’s all.”
“What was the bet on?” she and the whole class were curious now. I decided to tell the truth so taking a deep breath I told her,
“Whether Danny could get me too sleep with him or not. I found out about it and slapped him. End of story.” I shrugged. I may have appeared calm but inside I was literally screaming. I’d never said that out loud before and I realised that I’d tried to bury it in the back of my head.
Out of the corner of my eye I saw Danny’s head snap up. I turned to look at him and was drowning in blue eyes that seemed to crackle at me. Oops think I upset him there. I smiled slightly and turned back to our teacher. She was looking flustered and was biting her lip. Probably wondering why she even bothered to ask.
“Um, okay then. You two can go and get dressed. You’ll work on your assignment here, now, were I can keep an eye on you both.” I nodded and turned on my heel towards the changing rooms not bothering to look behind me.
“Is that what you think it was?” I heard a soft voice say behind me. I turned and saw Danny glaring at me.
“I’m not in the mood for this Danny so back off.” I turned my back but felt a hand grip my arm. I was flipped around and pined against the wall. Danny’s eyes were litterly on fire as they burned into me. Anger visibly in there depths but something else as well, something I couldn’t identify.
His grip tightened until it was painful and I let out a gasp and shut my eyes against it. I felt his grip losened and when I opened my eyes his face was softer than before but still pretty pissed looking.
“Is that what you think the bet was about?” I couldn’t speak but just nodded. He released me suddenly and I fell against the wall. He’d turned his back on me and was running his fingers through his hair. “Why would you think that?”
“I didn’t. I trusted you. I was going to give you a chance but I heard something that changed that.” I said rubbing my arms thinking of the bruises that ill likely be there in a couple of hours.
He’d spun back to me, confusion in his eyes.
“I heard two of your mates talking about how you’d get a hundred from Jake if you got me laid.”
“That wasn’t it. That wasn’t. You know I wouldn’t do that to you Lisa. You know me.” I just shook my head and sighed.
“So what you’re telling me is that there was no bet?” disbelief was plain in my tone. He looked guilty now and wouldn’t meet my eye. “Hah, that’s what I thought.”
“I made a bet yeah, but not that one. It was just to take you out, that’s it. I swear.”
“Oh, that’s so much better isn’t it.” I said sarcastically.
“Let me finish!” he took a deep breathe, “I called it off. I told Jake how I felt about you and he let it drop but not before it was spread all around the school.” He ran his fingers through his hair again and added, “You have no idea how happy I was when I saw you walking towards me on the pitch.”
“Probably about the same as I was in my garden.” I muttered quietly. I studied the ground and wouldn’t look up. I felt his fingers under my chin lifting it up to meet his gaze and the tears I’d been keeping at bay ran down my cheeks. He brushed them away gently with his thumb and I smiled gently.
“I meant everything I said that day.” He said softly his lips just inches from mine. For a couple of seconds I forgot to breath.
“No, you didn’t.” I shook my head gently.
“I’ll prove it then. Look at me, Lisa.” I did. “Do you see? Do you see the love in my eyes when I look at you? Do you see how much I care?”
I gasped as I did suddenly see everything he was pleading with me to see. Everything I’d ever wanted from him but never got. But surely it’s not real. How can it be? How can I trust him?

I asked him this and he smiled gently, moving even closer, “Have faith.” Was his simple answer and then his lips met mine.

The gentle kiss was explosive as fireworks went of in my head one by one. He tilted his head to deepen the kiss and I clung to perhaps my last and possibly only chance to a happy ending. With this thought I smiled into his lips and was lost in the oblivion that is happiness and first love.

At least… for now.
