I have watched a man break in front of my eyes. I have seen a girl turn to drugs and alcohol. I have watched a boy that was full of life lose any sense of independence and spirit. I have seen a friend fall to the ground with no ability to get up. I have felt exactly what they have felt. I have had my heartbroken.
Does society depict that we as human beings cannot live a life without a companion? We break down these superficial barriers of racism and sexism and state that we are all equal. But why then, are we putting all our eggs in one basket? If 50% of marriages in America end in divorce, you would think it would make everyone open their eyes and see it as a fantasy that we are all supposed to fall in love and live happily ever after.
You see it on television, you see it in movies, and you read about it in books and magazines. Sometimes I feel like we are brainwashed into thinking that if we are not in a relationship then our lives are empty. Perhaps it would be a much wiser move if we all step back and took a look at the bigger picture. We as people are all alone; no-one will ever be completely a part of you, they can’t read your mind, they can’t witness everything you do, they can’t feel the exact same feelings as you do, they wont know what you are thinking as you take your last breath in this life.
If we saw life for what it really was we would appreciate the people in it more. It’s far better to take the view that we are all on this journey alone, (with the exception of your religious views) and every now and then we get the chance to lean on someone, but at the same time that person can leave whenever they want. I guess I am saying that we need to start living for ourselves and then we can really appreciate those people that travel in and out of our lives more.

Perhaps it’s a selfish view of life, but imagine how much better we would cope when we are forced to stand alone in life. It might just be that little bit easier to get back on the horse when everyone in your life abandons you. Maybe we are the key to our own happiness.

We need to love ourselves then we can learn to love others. We will learn to love uncontrollably, take risks in a stranger, put our heart on the line for someone, take a chance with the girl next door…But at the end of the day if we were alone, we could be just fine.

I would love to know how you feel about this. Please leave a comment and let me know if you agree or dissagree
