Fireworks danced across the backdrop of stars, each one representing lives lost.

She tried keeping the memories out. The hugs and warm greetings when first assigned. The help Mary Lin gave her when writing those first reports. Of getting a personal tour by Dan and Miranda Dauber, and the Earth cutting through the glass canopies in botany section. All now gone.

She was supposed to be on that space station. Evelyn got pulled back to Earth to give a lecture to the graduating astrodynamics class. The image of that letter now burned in her mind. Sitting in the place it all started, she looked up.

This was where she first saw it. A gigantic space station filled with plants, experiments and people whirling through the blackness of space. Enthralled since a child, she would watch it after school cutting across the sky. Today, she watched it for the last time. The embers winking out one after another. Like stars fading into a sunset.
