Brothers Room

By: Allistar Banks

I could never sleep without my brother falling asleep first. Mama slept in her room every night and would check on my brother's room to see how everything was before saying bedtime prayers. He was my sibling and one of a kind. He had his daily night routine of turning on the night light, wearing gray shorts and a white t-shirt, and watching cartoons. He giggled before falling alseep the day before he died.

It did not phase me this would be the last time before I would see Lawrence again. Mother had fallen asleep with Bailey by her side. I went down the hall to my room to write in my journal. The eve before he passed was the least expected.

The next day had arrived and mama woke from her sleep. I got up at 7 to get ready for school. Grandma was always on high alert to hear him get up. Lawrence always had someone to give him his medicine to and feed him in the morning. The morning was still and quiet with birds chirping in the trees. Next day was here for the whole family.

"Hello sweetie, how are you?" mother asked.

"Fine, I am so ready for the last semester of college to be over with," I replied.

"I know honey, college is hard but rewarding with a good job afterwards," she smiled.

"Right, getting a job after college is tought too," I acknowledged.

"Please be careful on the way," mother warned.
"Love you," she said.

"You too," I responded.

I headed out the house for my video production class. The drive was smooth and not one harmful car in the way. Fog had risen up and it got hard to see. I turned on my fog lights to see through the fog. It was a thirty minute drive to school and wanted video production to be over.

I got to class on time and sat to take notes. It was thirty minutes into the lecture adn I got a call from grandma. Lawrence had collapsed on the floor of a seizure. I gasped for breath and told my professor what had happened. He understood and waved bye to me. The students did not know what was going on. Class had started and got a surprise call from grandma.

I rushed home to see Lawrence lying on the floor with blood dripping from his mouth. I froze and looked around at his body. My heart stopped and palms got sweaty. Grandma called 911 to pick him up. Ambulance came to the front yard along with the police. I was glad to know he would be in good hands. They got him on a stretcher to the hospital. Would he make it or die? I did not know what would happen next.
