The alarms blared. She had a feeling in her stomach that this wasn’t going to go well. Then, it all went black.

Then she awoke, the scent of blood heavy in the air. For a moment, she couldn’t remember where, or even who she was. All was calm. Then, a million memories flashed through her head.

As she opened her eyes, she noticed a particular silence that she had not heard in a while. There was nothing. No sound at all. Not the low chatter she had become accustomed to, nor the footsteps of the scientists and engineers coming to let her out of the machine. Before she even opened her eyes, she knew that something was really wrong. She hadn’t heard this kind of silence. Then, she made a fatal mistake. She opened her eyes, and got out of the machine.

She was met with darkness. In the corner of the metallic room, there was a single red flashing light. The piercing screech of the alarms going off hurt her ears. As her eyes adjusted to the darkness, she was met with a horrific scene.

Her heart stopped. Someone had written “sorry” in blood on the wall. It looked fresh. On the floor were all of the people she had been talking to seemingly seconds ago. They looked fine except for- no, they most definitely were not fine; each and every one of them had a hole the size of a baseball through their chests. Their bodies, caked in dried blood, littered the room. She shut her eyes again, holding back tears, hoping that this was all some sick joke, or better yet, a nightmare.

When she opened them again, nothing had changed. Her sobs filled the room. The bodies of her friends still covered the floor. She looked up and glanced at the sign on the door: “Testing Facility ROOM518”. She then knew exactly what had happened.
