my sons are always with me
and this is how I know
i can hear them all around me
everywhere I go:

in the rattle of a window
in the pounding of the rain
in the wailing of a siren
in the screeching of a train

in the happiness of laughter
in the terror of a scream
in the crashing of an ocean
in the babble of a stream

in the roaring of an engine
in the whisper of a word
in the crying of a baby
in the twitter of a bird

in the yelping of a puppy
in the playing of a band
in the gurgling of water
in the clapping of a hand

in the crashing of a cymbal
in the banging of a gong
in the melody of music
in the singing of a song

in the one we are together
in the four we are apart
in the love we have between us
in the beating of my heart
