Fear in the Shadows
By: Brian Burruss

“What do I have to say for myself? What do you think I have to say? Surely nothing that you will ever care about, but since you asked…I might as well indulge my guest. I wouldn’t want to be a bad host, or in this case entertainer.
“Here I sit in this cell stuck forever. You think that you have won, don’t you? Look around you. There are no witnesses to be found. You can be honest. Do you really think that you have won?”
He sat within his jail cell looking through the bars at his visitor who hid behind a mask and cape. The caped man stood there staring. Not a single muscle twitched.
“Ah, the strong silent type. Playing hard to get? How cute!” The jailed man slowly approached the bars. “Can I let you in on a secret?” He quickly glanced through the bars to his left and right. “You will never defeat me…” The man behind bars held his finger to his lips. “But don’t tell anybody…”
A dark and hysterical laughter rose from the shadows of the cage. The masked hero still stood as if he was frozen in time.
“Even if I die in this cell, I will live on forever. Do you want to know how?” The caged man glanced around the room once again. “Because my name will live on forever…” The laughter shot through the air echoing within the entire building.
“You can kill me, but the people of this world know my name. They have seen my face. Their hearts are stained with fear. Even if I disappear forever, they will still quake with fear and terror when near any shadow or dark alley. Every time the power goes out my face will pop up within their brains. Every time a scream rises throughout the night streets, my name will race to the front of their minds. It’s all in the name.
“I will always be hiding under your skin as well. With me out of the way, you will have no more need for that cape, yet I guarantee you will never leave without it. There will be this small, tiny thought within your mind. ‘What happens if he comes back?’ ‘What if somebody follows in his footsteps?’ What do you think about that? Could anybody truly have the guts to follow in my footsteps?” Behind the bars, the man’s hand signaled for the masked cape to come closer, yet the hero never budged.
“Fine, don’t come closer. I just wanted to whisper in your ear for effect, but you just have to ruin everything.” He sulked to himself for a few seconds.
“Now look what you did… I forgot where I was, and I had the whole thing prepared perfectly… Oh yeah, I remember!” His index finger shot up in the air. “Yes, somebody could follow in my footsteps.
“Trust me when I say that I am not the only crazy psychopath out in this world. I might be the first to make a stand like this, but I assure you that more will rise. There are some out there right now arguing to themselves, because that is what we do, about how I failed and that they could do better.” The beast within the cage dropped his chin to his chest and began to drag his feet as he slowly slid his way back into the shadows of his cell.
He continued within a soft whisper. “Can you see me? It’s too dark in here to see me now isn’t it? Look outside. It’s night time. There’s no light. This is the time of day known as midnight. It was my preferred time of attack. You stand on the other side of the bars, but are you sure that you will be safe if I attacked right now? We have fought at this time for many nights. You and I have a long history. You have never been able to best me. Even now you think you have me, but you don’t. You cannot control your mind. I will always be running free within the crevices of your wrinkled little blob of pink mush.” His voice sank even lower and quieter.
“In order to assure that I never leave this cell you will have to do one of two things; either stand there and guard me yourself or kill me. But you know me, don’t you? Neither one will truly rid the world of me. Even with you guarding me, I can possibly still escape. On the other hand, kill me and the other crazies out there might rise much quicker than you would like.
“You might not know it, but the word is spreading as we speak. There is a price on your head. Remember all of the banks I robbed and jewels I stole? Remember everything that I have gotten away with? I wasn’t doing it for me. I did it for you.
“You’ll be lonely without me. The day I die is the day the plan begins. Think about it for just a bit. My treasures were never found. My riches are out there somewhere…but where? Only I know, but my death will let the whole world know. Many will go frantic searching for them. Many will come for you, because that is what I have asked them to do. The criminals within the streets have heard my voice. With your death, they will gain my riches.”
The voice trailed off even more from within the shadows. He spoke so soft that the sound of a pin drop would have covered it up. “You better learn to sleep with your eyes open…”
