The other day I was at a boy scout ceremony - a friend of mine was getting his Eagle badge. He had built an amphitheater in the woods as his project; that was where we had the ceremony. Everything was going well... until the fire. The fire department's final report: it was arson.

The day began

With smiles and laughter

Hugs and happy tears

Kisses and contented ears

It was a celebration

Of a new Eagle scout

An oath read aloud,

His parents watched proud

At the end of the day

Came awful disaster

We looked through the glass,

Saw a fire in the grass!

Way off in the distance

Ryan's project was burning

His crowning glory

A sad, sad story

The smoke billowed up,

Parents gathered round

Smiles washed away

Into faces of dismay

A time of joy

Now a time of tragedy

Forever I will remember

The sight of those black embers
