They told her to be brave

to hold her head high,

She shouldn’t be ashamed

it’s ok to cry,

She shook her head and smiled

and gave a humorless laugh,

But to those who were watching

she appeared happy at last,

She followed their guidance

and put on a brave face,

She seemed to be fine

no longer living in disgrace,

She wore a masquerade mask

and they all though it was real,

Such a happy person having pain?

The thought was surreal,

She never shed a tear

she always faced them with a smile,

And satisfied with their work

they left her alone for a while,

As soon as they all left

her world came crumbling down,

The thought of finding happiness

was like chasing a cloud,

She cried herself to sleep

She no longer put up an act,

And when her soul was dying

they all came running back,

Shocked at what they found

they told her to put on a brave face,

And with an audience now watching

she cried behind a smiling masquerade.
