He had not meant to take it.

That was a lie.

There it was, next to that guy -- fine suit, good hair. For as long as it took to grab the case, he hated him. In 10 seconds of pure loathing, he whisked past, grabbed the handle. Fine Suit never noticed. He was hitting up the girl gazing at arrival/ departure times. Her blond hair swayed. Her glance shifted subtly to the moving case.

His backpack now weighed twice in his mind. If he let the damn case go, no one could say a thing. Just a prank. A mistake. An error corrected.

Maybe, he could get away with something. What would he find if he got on the train  with the case, unmolested? Fine Suit wasn't all that different than him. In his backpack were college texts, unused gym clothes. Definitely no drugs. Money? Ha. He was lucky he could afford getting on the train each day.

What if he did let it go? Someone else would grasp the handle and off it would go again. The case was generic. So everyman's. The risk might be worth it. The train door started to open. He was ready to live.
