Quite Content

A young man was walking home one day when he saw a young girl lying in a field of grass. Curious as to what she was doing, the young man stopped at the edge of the field and called out to her.

"Excuse me, what are you doing?"

The young girl turned her head and and looked at the young man as if looking at a painting. The young man adjusted his collar and once again called out to her.

"I said, what are you doing?"

The young girl continued to stare.

"You see," began the young man, " I was walking by when I saw you lying in this field, and I, uh, was just wondering what it is, exactly, um, you are doing."

The young girl blinked. She then rolled over onto her stomach and told the young man what it is she was doing.

"I am being quite content." she said with a small smile.

"content?" the young man responded, much as one does when suddenly faced with an answer one was in no way expecting.

"quite content." repeated the young girl.

"I'm afraid I don't understand." the young man said with a confused expression on his face. "How can you be content . . . "

"quite content." interjected the young girl.

"right, sorry." He continued, " How can you be quite content when there is so much to be done?"

The young girl stared at the young man for a moment and said,

"because the sun is setting."

The young man then looked behind the young girl and gazed at the sunset. He could not remember the last time he had seen anything so spectacular. Rays of gold and red light seemed to envelope the entire sky. The land was cast in shadow while clouds became awash in color. The world itself seemed to stop turning. The thoughts that had been abuzz in the young mans mind only a moment before suddenly quieted, and there was only silence. He felt a nudge on his arm, and when he turned his head he found a man in a business suit looking at him.

"What are you doing?" the man asked.

The young man looked back to the field, searching for the young woman, but it was as if she had never been there. He felt the nudge again and turned once more to the man.

"I said, what are you doing?" the man repeated himself, slightly frustrated.

The young man stared at the business man as if staring at a painting. Finally, with a slight smile on his face he said,

"I am being content."

The man blinked. He then gave the young man a strange look and continued down the sidewalk muttering to himself about the foolish people in the world. The young man's gaze followed him for a moment and then returned to the sunset where the sky was softly fading into a dark purple and the first stars were beginning to appear. He took a deep breath, and slowly let it escape his lips.

"Quite content."
