Often we don’t realise exactly how much a person means to us until they leave. We don’t understand why everything feels better when they’re there. There are billions of people on this planet, so why is it that we are affected so strongly by only one? Is it because of the constant struggle to find a companion? Maybe it’s because we don’t like being alone. Or maybe, just maybe, it’s because they understand us. They’re willing to stand in as the Rock when the Hard Place gets a new mask. Maybe they’ve been there from the beginning, or they might have joined us along the way, but it doesn’t matter when they arrived, all that matters is that they are here. And when that person is gone, it leaves a void. It takes a while, but maybe we’ll realise that the void has always been there, right from the start, but this person has waltzed in and stitched it up. But one day, the stitching will come undone. It’s the inevitable truth that stares everyone in the face. There is no escape from the inevitable. One day it will catch you, and maybe on that day your Rock isn’t there anymore, and that Hard Place, well, its masks have become the source of the void and you’ll find yourself longing for an escape, a way to free yourself from this awful being that is your own self. Some people try to fend off the masks with alcohol; but it will always fail. Others try to replace their Rock with a second best; but it’s never the same. There will always only be one Rock. Only one who will become a constant companion; only one to ease our loneliness; only one to understand our pain; only one to stitch the Void.
