I heard the door chime ring and turned to greet the new customer. He was tall and dark. The air around him seemed colder, as if he had never seen the sun. He seated himself at the table in the darkest corner of the room, as if he were hiding from the world. I wished I could hide from the world. I was run off of my feet with the amount of customers and the other waitress hadn’t turned up yet. The hours passed and the man sat unmoving, not speaking to anyone. Still Cindy hadn’t arrived. I was getting worried. She never missed a day of work; she needed the money too much. People came and people went, but Cindy wasn’t one of them; and neither was the dark man. The closing announcement rang through the bar and the man got up to go, leaving a single napkin on the table in his wake. I hurried over to wipe down his table, picking up the napkin in the process. There was something written in an elegant scrawl on the front of it: “Check the Freezer.” Just as I read this I heard a scream. My head whipped around to see Agatha, my boss, white faced and staring, holding the freezer open in front of her. But she wasn’t alone. Hanging out of the freezer was a hand, unmoving and blue with cold. Agatha wasn’t the only one who wasn’t alone. I felt myself pulled backwards into the darkness, leaving only smashed plates and a scream in my wake.
