Creatures from the Forest
In the dark of the night they stood,
like ghosts hidden in the wood.
Beside the trees they hover and stare,
their breath lighting up the freezing air.
Across the wood they creep,
no sound coming from their feet.
Above the the forest the moon shines bright,
like an empty street with a single light.
At the meerest sound they slipped forward into a hunter's stance,
nostrils flaring for any scents.
Over the branches of the tree I peer,
staying hidden out of fear.
Out of fog their leader comes,
making me want to run.
Around the trees I step,
my heart a freight train in my chest .
Behind me there is a noise,
and I whip around out of instinct, not choice.
From the darkness they stepped,
with no one to intercept.
Along beside me they walk,
watching me as they stalk.
Within my chest,
my heart will clench
As I draw my final breath,
and await my death.
