When Demons Wake

As thunder booms and lightning strikes

my tired, unconscious mind,

then hungry demons, deep inside,

upon my psyche dine.

-

And so, I roam demonic lands

where angels fear to tread,

with sins and secrets close at hand,

I keep the demons fed.

-

A sudden sense of menace looms

as tortured souls emerge,

from shallow graves and catacombs,

where gruesome figures lurk.

-

Insidious and sinister,

with soulless eyes of black,

revealing sharpened scimitars,

like murderous maniacs.

-

My startled heartbeat palpitates,

then skin begins to sweat,

as rising moons illuminate

their deathly silhouettes.

-

I try to fight, without success:

my limbs refuse to move.

Then in a state of deep distress,

I'm beaten black and blue.

-

I look above to crimson skies

whilst searching for the light,

then breathless, stressed, and terrified

I waken, bolt upright.
