2 contrasting 'sonnets' (14 lines with volta) about cycling up mont ventoux - the legendary mountain in Provence. When I rode up it I felt a combination of the 2 poems.

Ventoux - Crash & Burn

Confidence is high like the mountain above

Long lost child like glee awakes the soul

As southern sun brings adventure to boil

Early miles spin freely upwards without toil

Riding in the bright shadow of legends

Chasing brave heroes through sharp hairpin bends

The heart rate climbs as the road ahead soars

Strong trees, dark rock look on without remorse

With no introduction the Wall stops your course

Cruelly it sneaks up with juggernaut force

Vulnerable aged body, way past its best

Crumbles and fails in the face of the test

The last hour is hell as you're overcome

Foregone the mountain your senior has won

Ventoux - Soar like an Eagle

Oil on the chain, tyre air at high pressure

Deep fear in the gut, how will I measure?

With disdain she smirks at my prayer

G'ainst the Giant of Provence how will I fare?

She's ready to best me like a cruel friend

A rhythm and pace is hard to attend

As legs grind and gradient fights back hard

There's more in the hurt locker with dark rain

The black ribbon through still pine winds upward

Dark voices sing nothing but doubt and pain

In to the moonscape, the way ahead clears

Driven on by a vision, the end nears

Your bike is your best friend and lofted high

It's not life's small problems making you cry
