Pandemonium draft one
Chapter 1
I’m not exactly a genius. Ok, I am. I’m one of those dino geek freaks too. But it ain’t all dinosaurs. Ok, it is. That’s supposed to be funny. It ain’t is it? It’s not all boring though. Most of it is, but not all of it. Last project wasn’t. Far from it...
It wasn’t a sunny day, but it was summer. It was raining in fact. Typical England. I was in alleyway, playing on a hand held game. I’d named him Harry. There was a wooden roof-like thing above my head to stop the rain but it wasn’t working.
I wiped rain off the screen. I was on Mario Kart. It was my all week favoured game. It would change next week to something else.
Someone tapped me on the back and I nearly jumped out of my skin. Katherine handed me an ice cream. She was laughing
“Human presence detected.” Harry’s computer generated voice crocked.
“You’re a bit late.” I muttered, switching off the hand held and slipping it into my pocket.
“Well, Old Man Jerry gave me bus fare home too.” Katie said
“I wasn’t talking to you.” I said “I created a personal alarm on Harry and it sort of doesn’t work”
“What do you mean sort of?” Katie asked “Nothing you ever make works.”
“Oh ha ha” I said “very funny. Remind me to write that down in a list of your most witty comments” I took my dino fact cards out of my pocket “Anyway, I was thinking. Don’t say anything. You know for the dinosaur we’d like to encounter? We should d o a velociraptor.”
I handed Katie the card. She threw it behind her.
“Hey,” I cried, running back to get it “That cost me two quid.”
“It was a waste of money, Miles” she said, walking on “And why would you want to meet a velociraptor any way, or any dinosaur for that matter? There are lots of non-extinct reptiles you could meet, but you don’t want to meet them.”
“Yes, but that’s because Lenny the snake tried to eat me.” I said.
“He wasn’t going to eat you!” laughed Katie “Didn’t you want to play?”
“I think I’d prefer to be alive.”
Katie laughed all the way to school. I wasn’t very happy. We went to the science labs. No one ever appreciates me fully or at all for that matter. I’m just the quiet little genius that does everything for everyone. Well, not today. Ok, maybe today. Probably.
Katie took Lenny out of his tank.
“”hello, Lenny.” She said, grinning as she stroked the snake “Do you want to go and play with Mile?”
“Keep that thing away from me!” I cried, stepping back.
I walked straight into a table of chemicals. They all crashed to the floor, spilling everywhere.
“Miles!” cried Katie, putting Lenny back into the tank “What have you done now?”
“I didn’t mean to” I said, instantly.
I looked at the mess on the floor. Colours were mixing together. Steam was rising from the middle.
“What have you done?” said Katie, slightly worried
“I didn’t mean to.” I stuttered.

The Dinner Room

Marcus smiled weakly. This was it. He took a deep breath and was about to do it when Freddy walked up to Linda. Marcus groaned and walked back to Jhonny, who was stood smirking in the doorway.
“Did you do it?” he asked.
Marcus shook his head. Jhonny was still trying not to laugh. Marcus gave him a look.
“What?!” Jhonny exclaimed “It was funny!”
“Come on” Marcus muttered “I want to get to science early”
“Why? Are you going to try to ask Lenny out too?”
That was the last straw. Marcus turned around, kicked Jhonny, and then walked on. He didn’t want to fight. He usually let Jhonny do the fights.
“Marc!” Jhonny called after him “Marcus! Marc. It was just a joke.”
“Well it was very funny.” Said Marcus, not looking up.
He pushed open the door to the science labs. Two kids were already in there, staring at a smoking mess on the floor.

The Science Labs, 5 Minutes Earlier

“Get some towels” cried Katie
“Don’t be stupid.” I said “It could catch fire.”
“It’s already on fire!” Katie cried “Ok then, what do you propose we do?”
“Keep calm” I said, backing away from the reaction and knocking half a dozen more chemicals into it in the process.
“Miles, you moron!”
Just then, the door opened. Two older boys walked in. I dropped another chemical into the reaction.
“What have you done?!” Marcus cried.
“I...and the snake...and...oops?” I tried. It didn’t work. Instead, he did a very Marcus-like thing and yelled at me.
“You are such an idiot!” He yelled “You’ve created an unstable eruption and this whole place could go up any minute!”
“I didn’t mean to.” I mumbled, uselessly.
“I guess you didn’t mean to be moron ether.” Marcus muttered.
“That was uncalled for.” I cried.
“What’s that?” whispered Katie.
She was pointing at the mess on the floor. A strange, glowing ball had appeared from the smoke. We all stared at it, mesmerized.
“It’s a time and energy transfer globe.” I muttered.
“What?” asked Jhonny
“A wormhole.” Explained Marcus.
“Hi,” said Katie, smiling at Jhonny “I’m Katherine, but you can call me Katie.”
“I’m Jhonny.” Jhonny said, shaking Katie’s hand “He’s Marcus.”
“Miles” I said
“Yes, no one cares who you are.” Interrupted Marcus “Can we get back to the wormhole?”
I had a feeling I wasn’t going to like Jhonny, or Marcus that much ether. I was right.
