Our Eyes

By Richard Gardner

I carefully inspect the neckline on all of your shirts.

I make sure you don't have any holes in your socks.

I take any garment that is worn or torn.

You take my heart.

I clean the windows while you are at work.

I trim the hedges to pass the time.

I feed the dog and he loves me.

You don't notice.

I rifle through the trash looking for food you didn't finish.

I call the phone while you aren't at home.

I write you letters.

You don't care.

I peek through the window while you watch TV.

You suddenly turn around and see me.

Our eyes meeting was love.

You call the cops.
