I used to always think love was impossible. Non-existent. A myth. Until the day I met Nick. He was my perfect. From day one I knew he was the one for me. Only, I wasn’t sure he felt that way about me. Typical. Who knew that I would be the girl having secret crushes on a guy that I thought didn’t know I even existed. I kept this crush on Nick going for a while. There were times that I hated him, and times I didn’t. No matter what he never left my mind.
Then one day, something changed. I told myself I was done with him. That he would never want me. He was just some guy to me now.
Ironically, that day he stopped me in the hallway, and as he looked me in the eyes, I felt my heart stop. What did he want?
“Yes?” I said, replying to my name being called.
“This is a little hard for me to say,” he said. Then, after taking a deep breath he said, “Gabrielle, will you go out with me?”
I still felt nothing. No hammering heart that was about to pop out of my chest, no fireworks inside. Nothing.
“Why?” I replied. Really wondering what motivated him to ask me out today of all days.
“Well, I kinda need a girlfriend…” he said. This was not the answer I had been waiting for.
“No.” I said quickly, utterly disappointed and feeling used I turned my back to him and started to walk away. He grabbed my arm and spun me around so that I was facing him once again.
“Wait,” he said. “You’re beautiful. You’re nice, smart, funny, sweet, kind. You care about people. You’re beautiful. And I’m sorry it took me so long to realize it."
“Yes.” I said surprisingly, as tears swelled in my eyes and the fireworks finally went off inside.
That year was my Junior year in high school. We had done all the things that young people in love would do. We kissed in the rain, went for walks, and much more. He showed me off to his friends who were more popular than I would have ever been. No one that we knew ever felt the way we felt about eachother. It was a rare kind of love. He was constantly showing me how much he loved me every day. And I, him. We did not get married. We decided to split after we started college when we both went to different schools. I, however, am happily married thanks to him. He taught me that love is never impossible.
