It is late: I should really be sleeping
but I can't close my eyes or I'll hear
the sound of her laugh and my weeping
as you drift without smile or tear

If our God has the mercy they claim
then such cruelty as hers can't endure
You're no more than a shadow of her
with no right to her voice or her name

The years since her death have been seven
but my memories still hold her well
Her face was as lovely as heaven
and her soul was cold as hell

- : - : - : -

I don't know why you've chosen this hour,
cruel specter, my thoughts to consume
On this Earth is there really no power
that can keep you walled up in your tomb?

But if God has the mercy they claim
then you can't break me now as she did
on my heart you cannot place a bid
and my soul will not be yours to maim

The years since her death have been seven
but my memories still hold her well
Her smile was lovely as heaven
and her spirit was cold as hell

- : - : - : -

We loved once--at least, I was her lover
though her heart was both chaste and perverse
I loved her as I had loved no other
and she treated my love like a curse

If our God has the mercy they claim
then the Devil must finally have lease
on his own, and my heart may have peace
while her soul watches, frozen and lame

The years since her death have been seven
but my memories still hold her well
Her eyes were as lovely as heaven
and her heart was cold as hell

- : - : - : -

Cruel specter, why aren't you now weeping?
How can you still laugh through my pain?
It is late: I should really be sleeping
but I can't rest while you still remain

Oh God, show the mercy they claim
and call back this spirit who haunts me!
Can it be, after all, she still taunts me
as she smiles through fire and flame?

The years since her death have been seven
But if she rests now, none can tell
Much too beautiful for heaven
She is far too cold for hell
