Love, do not think because my tears are dry
that I've not cried: or that each poisoned dart
you've glanced my way has stricken not my heart
because I give no sign I've seen it fly.
And in the night, don't think I do not sigh
or look for ways this sorrow to depart;
don't think the healing journey soon to start
because I do not seem about to die.

If it were true that looks could give a sign
of what lies underneath, then surely you
would be not near as lovely: surely I
would wear like jewels the tears you find so fine.
If faces could be trusted to speak true
we'd know your sorrow--and my lack--a lie.
