Since love is gone, I find no joy
in knowing it is so
though it's become a poet's ploy
to gladly see it go--

to see the beauty in a branch
so lately bare of flowers,
to hate the light in morning's blanch
and love dark evening hours,

to give one's eyes to fallen leaves,
one's mind to melted snows,
to think more fair the heart that grieves
than love that blooms and grows.

It's thought a virtue by the fox
whose grapes are out of reach
to find the tick of dusty clocks
more beautiful than speech.

Yes, love is dead, but I'll not run
to find joy in that pain--
what fools are they, who call the sun
not lovlier than rain!

I see no peace in aching heart
nor strength in broken soul!
There is no beauty in the part
'twas not there in the whole!
