What is it that you need from me? You know I cannot give
these hands that someone else's hands may one day need to touch:
these lips too many lips have kissed: this tongue that's lied too much:
this life that someone else's life may one day need to live.

I've gone too far to come back now, and you're too far behind
to find and love this broken soul, this empty, broken mind.
You'll never have it all, my love, I only have a part;
since I don't need it anymore, just take this broken heart.

If you can hold it tight, my love, if you can make it feel;
if you can keep it safe, my love, if you can make it heal;
if you can find the pieces, love, if you can make this real;
since I don't need it anymore, please take this broken heart.

You say there's more to life than what you had and what you lost.
You say this broken piece will fit together once again
and nothing's gained by looking back on all that might have been
but choices have a price, my love, and time must pay the cost.

It's not too late to turn back now, but it's so hard to do.
I can't find all the pieces, I can't give them back to you
and of this life I've lead, my love, I only have a part;
since I don't need it anymore, just take this broken heart.

I can't keep holding on, my love, I cannot make it feel;
I couldn't keep it safe and now I cannot make it heal.
There's just too many pieces and these wounds are just too real.
Since I don't need it anymore, please take this broken heart.

I gave away my life today, I gave away my soul
and you weren't there to see the way he wouldn't meet my eyes.
It's easy, love, to lose the truth and get lost in a lie.
It's easier to lose the piece than try to fix the whole.

But there is something still I know I cannot give away;
it's tied up in a knot of words I'm too afraid to say.
I gave away the pieces, love, but I held back a part;
since I can't hold it anymore, please take this broken heart.

You thought that you could heal me--can't you see that you were wrong?
You cannot fix me, darling, I've been broken far too long
and time's a tide we cannot fight; it's pull is far too strong
and all that's left is pain, my love. Please take this broken heart...

...and all that's left is pain, my love,
there's nothing more to gain, my love,
it's driving me insane, my love,
please take this broken heart...
