If we must eventually say goodbye to everything we love, why bother loving at all?

If Kings are but Kings for an hour
If Gods are but Gods for a day
If seeds must so quickly turn flower
and flowers so soon blow away

If the stars cannot be stars forever
If rivers must all wind to sea
If "tomorrow" so soon turns to "never"
How long can you stay here with me?

If Love is but Love for a minute
If Life meets its Death in a night
Then this Life and the Love that is in it
have only the moment to fight

If the sun cannot shine here forever
If every road must reach a bend
If "tomorrow" so soon turns to "never"
as every day reaches its end

If every tree fails in the winter
If each season passes us by
If each fire dies in a cinder
If every "hello" is "goodbye"

If I cannot love you forever
If we'd just as soon send off as greet
If love's bonds are so soon to sever
If Time's such a hard foe to beat

If "tomorrow" so soon turns to "never"
If each forward step's a retreat
If you cannot love me forever
Then why did we bother to meet?

Your pen name fits this poem perfectly! And, what a beautiful melancholic(?) poem...
Sad & true sometimes.
Although, I like to think of time-moving-forward as better-than-the-alternative. "For now, we have this moment" is my kind of philosophy (or at least, I try).
Fantastic writing! I look forward to reading more of your work.

Thank you! Melancholic is a rather fun word to use, isn't it? :-)

whoah! A week I have wondered all around this web site giving people some feedback and this is the first writing that I actually think to be worth of five stars! I LOVE IT! I can see why your pen name is Bitter Irony. It screams to me from these lines and I just got to say that you have some talent. The last verse made me crazy. Congratulations, man! You just got yourself a fan!

Bitter Irony:

This has to be the most fantastic poem I have read yet.

Fantastic use of rhyming and rhythm along with incredible wit.

I am so glad and relieved you did not make reference to any practice which might pertain to one's personal hygiene.

In verse 5, line 4.
Did you intend to say: If every "hello" in "goodbye"

Just wondering.

Happy trails,

Ed Bradley.

Thank you. No, the line is correct, if a little unclear: what it means is that when we say hello, we might as well say goodbye while we're at it, since we'll have to leave each other sometime soon anyway. Rather pessimistic, but that's how I was feeling at the time I wrote this. :-)

Really enjoyed this one, one of the few poems I've come across where I don't have to search for the metre. I also love the imigary - reminds me of something else that has the lines 'what if the world refused to turn, what if the clouds refused to rain.'

Wonderful, great writing and wonderful sentiment.
I really enjoyed this one. I often wonder about time, love, life and death. We are here such a short time, I always remind myself life is not a dress rehersal, love is wonderful, but tragic when one looses that loved one.
