Dirty grey clouds fill the murky sky,

Spreading their chill like the plague

They live only to kill,

To snuff out every dancing light.

The rising sun chokes on the smoky darkness

Gasping, he stretches his claws to beg for the world’s mercy

Before being engulfed in a chasm of gloomy silence

Just centimetres from his bed.

Broken trees stretch out their bony fingers

Sharp as a dagger to the touch

And cold as a knife to the heart.

Lifeless, they are frozen in time,

Stark naked, but not with shame.

For in death’s wake, new life has begun

In a beautifully woven cradle of twigs

A mother sparrow nurtures her young.

The downy feathers she plucks from her own breast

Render the cold wind powerless.

The sun cannot be contained forever

One day he will break free

The sky will be washed clean with the pitter-patter of raindrops

But for now winter remains.

The desolate landscape is

A beautiful mess.
