The Open Hand

Fear that once held me down in emotional tidal waves,

pain that kept me from reaching your hand.

Wanting to grasp tightly as the air slowly escaped,

struggling and fighting,

reaching for your outstretched hand.

The pain and fear laughing, mocking

repeating to me all my failures,

and still your hand stayed strong;

within my reach,

waiting for me.

For me to summon courage,

hidden within all along,

strength to grab hold.
