The Reason People Die.
Five years after the beginning of time, everyone was immortal, even humans. This only means that the only way for the immortal to die would be for them to be killed, and not of old age. But now the birth of one child will change it all. The son of the immortal, Poseidon, was born from an immortal human. The child was named Surfecious, and he was a demigod (half god, half human). Surfecious was thirteen years old. It all started in a small cottage that was built right beside Mount Olympus, the palace of the gods, and ruled by Zeus. Surfecious had his own family apart form his true father, Poseidon, because he was always busy. Surfecious had a family of nine. His real mother, four brothers, three sisters, and a royal servant.
Surfecious and his family were gathered around the built-to-last dining table. They were just finishing their ambrosia when they heard the door of their cottage swing open on its hinges. The noise was also accompanied by a woman screaming angrily and hissing noises. Surfecious looked at the mirror next to the table that reflected to the room where the screaming was heard. In the other room, there stood a woman in a black robe with reptilian skin and snakes for hair. Medusa! Surfecious thought that the mighty son of Zeus, Perseus, had slain the repulsing Medusa.Unfortunately she came back from the Underworld.
Medusa stared back at Serfecious and she stopped screaming and grinned at him along with all of her snakes. She then said, “The son of my lover? It appears that Poseidon has spawned a child I see. I thought I would be the one that he would choose. I have been proved wrong. It appears that you are a demigod.” Her face expression then changed from ‘I come in peace’, to pure hatred. She then screamed, “WHERE IS SHE! WHO IS THIS MERE HUMAN!”
Medusa then moved away from the mirror and into the other room looking as mad as ever. Surfecious knew better than to look at her directly so he closed his eyes. What he didn’t know was that his family had looked upon Medusa and had been turned to stone. As they were turned to stone, they made a high-pitched rumbling noise that Surfecious had happened to hear. Surfecious then opened his eyes and saw nine stone sculptures facing in the direction of where Medusa now stood. “NO! NO, NO, NO, NO NO!,” Surfecious screamed before running over to the wall to grab the sword that hung in honor.
“You think you can kill me! I’ll just come back!”
Following the sound of Medusa’s voice with his eyes closed, Surfecious swung the sword long and true and struck Medusa in the ribs. Medusa then turned to ashes. Surfecious knew that if he didn’t confront Hades in the Underworld, Medusa would come again, but Surfecious knew of only one way to get there. Death. So Surfecious held the sword up to his heart and thrust it on target. With a silent moan Surfecious fell to the ground.
Surfecious then woke up at the feet of Hades himself. Hades then asked Surfecious what business he had in the Underworld.
“You must not let Medusa come back to life,” demanded Surfecious.
“WHO ARE YOU TO THINK THAT YOU WILL GIVE ME ORDERS,” Hades yelled. “The only way that I will agree to that would be to hear you say that you will give me anything.”
Surfecious then agreed to give Hades anything. Hades waved his hand and then Surfecious heard the scream of Medusa in the distance. Hades then told Surfecious his punishment. “You will stay here forever. This is the fault of your own father. I hated him. Also, you have brought a new meaning to dying. You have just changed the rules of Fate. If one immortal soul dies forever, then so will everything else. From now on, anyone who lives more than their destined time will have to deal with The Fates.”
From that day forward, know one was immortal but the gods and everyone had a time limit to living. This rule extended to this day. Surfecious lived forever in the Underworld, left to be judged and to walk the Fields of Punishment. This story proves that if one person of the same kind changes, than so will the rest. This is the reason people die.
