Complete, utter silence.
Imagine it. Not a ripple or a splash, a hiss or that ever-present whoosh of air.
Then imagine a booming thud. Not once, but continuous, over and over and over again. A low whine and a shrill shriek. The whirring of gears and the ticking of a clock. A child’s piercing cry…
Your child’s death scream.
These sounds echoed in your head, firmly lodged inside. If you opened your eyes, you would have seen the slanted charcoal rocks, the flickering ruby flames that clawed at the cloggy air. You would have seen the flattened cities; skyscrapers lying flat on the floor. Dry river beds sat amongst the ashes of once sturdy trees, whole oceans had disappeared.
Maybe you would have seen the formidable surge of fire sweep up behind you. A huge inescapable barricade, consuming everything in its path with its torrid heat, it stormed forwards eagerly. Maybe you would have ran, tried to escape your death.
Or maybe not.
