She couldn't understand it. Ethan was her best friend. They had been friends since diapers. Now he was going to leave her for the biggest sleep around in their entire school? Zoey wished she could tell him about her true feelings but, what if he didn't feel the same? The issue had haunted her for way too long. "I can't believe she finally said yes." Ethan announced for at least the hundredth time that night. The two teens were at Ethan's doing their homework, just like any other Thursday. But things wouldn't be this way for long. Soon, Zoey and Ethan wouldn't hang out anymore. Ethan would be spending time with.. Taylor. Zoey wondered if she should tell Ethan that Taylor would eventually leave him when she got a better offer. But he should know that anyway. "I'm really happy for you E." Zoey forced a smile and looked at her best friend through her bangs. "Don't worry Zo. You'll find your Prince Charming eventually." Ethan gave her that dazzling smile and got back to his work. 'I already have.' she thought to herself. "So where are you going to take her tomorrow night?" Even though she really didn't want to know, she would still be the supportive best friend she always was. "The movies. Then maybe to the park to play on the swings. Or if I'm lucky her house." Zoey had to fight back the urge to run out of the house. Since when was Ethan like that? Then again... Ethan wasn't exactly acting like Ethan lately. "I have to go. Mom will be wondering where I am." Zoey stood up and got her books packed up. "Alright. I'll call you when I get back from my date." Ethan smiled and handed Zoey her keys. She made it to her driveway before she erupted into tears. She sat there for a few minutes, trying to get a hold over herself. When she went inside her house, her mom immediatly noticed something was wrong. "Zo? What's the matter?" her mother asked. "Ethan is going out on a date with Taylor. It's like I don't know him anymore." "Oh sweetheart. You're still his best friend though. Girlfriends will come and go but best friends will always be there. He'll come to realize that. Just give him some time." "Thanks mom." Zoey smiled and went up to her room. Friday was the longest day of her life. School was canceled because of snow and Ethan wouldn't answer his phone. Finally at nine he called her from his cell phone. "Meet me at the park." was all he said. He sounded like he was crying. Zoey ran to the park. Ethan was standing by the swings when she got there. "What happened?" she demanded, taking in his bloodshot eyes. "It was all a joke." he said quietly. "What?" "Taylor only agreed to go out with me because it was a joke." "Oh my gosh. I'm so sorry E." Zoey threw her arms around him. "Yeah me too. I can't believe I wasted all that time wishing I could have her when the one I actually wanted was right in front of me. "What?" Zoey asked, in shock. "I love you Zoey." he blushed and smiled at her. "I love you too." Just as they leaned in to kiss, Zoey woke up. She had fallen asleep waiting for Ethan to call her. Then her mom came in her room. She had tears running down her face. "What's the matter mom?" "Zoey, something happened." "What do you mean something happened?" "While Ethan was at the movies with Taylor, Taylor's ex-boyfriend showed up with a few guys. He told Ethan to leave but Ethan refused. So the guy's buddies beat Ethan up. Then Taylor's ex shot him. Ethan- Ethan is dead." "No!! You're lying!!! He's not dead! What kind of sick joke is this?? Where's Ethan????" "Zoey! He is dead and there is nothing you can do to change that! I know that he was your best friend but sweetheart, he's gone!" her mom grabbed her and hugged her. "No." Zoey repeated over and over as she sobbed into her mother's shoulder. Several months passed and Zoey finally built up the nerve to go up to the graveyard. Taylor, who had slept over, went with her. "Hey E." Zoey said softly. "I really miss you. And i wish I had told you sooner, but I was in love with you. Maybe if I had spoke up, things would be different for us. Matt asked if I wanted to go out with him tomorrow night. I said yes. I know you wouldn't want me to be moping over you so I'm trying to move on with my life. Taylor and I are really good friends now by the way. I thought you might like to know that. Nobody can ever replace you in my heart. But I'm moving on. After graduation next week, Tay and I are heading for California. We're going to get out of this town. Just like you always wanted to do. So this is goodbye. I love you."
