How do you explain this phenomenon of social media? This virtual explosion of sites like You-Tube and Facebook, outlet where anyone can post and share tidbits and morsels of their lives and experiences, from the mundane to the shocking. And on the flip side, others can become anonymous voyeurs, peeking behind the scenes, tweeting and twittering, the shocked and the shocking, all at our fingertips.
The answer is obvious. At our core we are all still 2 years old, shouting "Look at me, look at me!". The need to be noticed, the feeling of being special and unique, is one of our primal drives, and the siren of the lighted screen peers into our eyes and touches our souls in a primitive and instinctual way. Much like a moth to a flame, we cannot resist its mesmerizing lumination and hypnotic whispers. Our defenses fall away and we gaze, slack jawed and submissive, to bare ourselves and stand naked , exposed, as though nothing else mattered but the feel of the soft glow of the screen, watching us and nodding in silent approval like the proud parent we once longed to please.
Of course, there cannot be a supply without a synchronal demand , an electronic yin and yang. Much as we feel compelled to stare at a car wreck, an argument between lovers, or even blood as it drips from an open wound, we surf and browse, nibble and graze, feeding our psyche from the endless supply that flows like a river at our fingertips. Ah, but that river flows fast and deep, and mercilessly captures those who venture too far and snatches them away, lost to the virtual world, where the number of hits on a video or the friends on a page supplant the real lives of its victims, who grow sallow and reclusive, ghosts of their former selves, the ebb and flow of photons replacing firm flesh and blood.
So go, my virtual friends, and eagerly partake of and contribute to our new electronic overlord. Just remember that flesh is the real bond between humans, that some privacy is a good thing, that we become embarrassed and cover ourselves up to protect our souls, and those souls are precious and unique and should only be glimpsed by those who have earned our love and trust, the way our parents taught us those many years ago. "Watch me, Watch me!".
