“What are you doing, Polly?”

I jumped. I hadn’t realized that there was anyone behind me. I’d been sitting at the computer in the physics lab at LincolnHigh School for maybe an hour and no one had noticed me.

“I’m writing,” I told whoever it was.

“English project?”

My eyes still fixed on the screen, I replied, “Nah. I’m just getting the normal kind of writing out of my system so that it doesn’t mess with my ScriptFrenzy-ing.”

“What’s that?”

“You remember in November, when I didn’t sleep or do Calculus homework and carried my laptop around with me at all times?”

“Yeah, you were writing a novel about a flying anteater, right?”

I sighed. Due to my sleep deprivation caused by NaNoWriMo, I don’t really remember what I told people about the novel I was writing. “Yeah. It’s like that only with screenplays.”

“Any flying anteaters this time?” the voice asks me.

“Not really, well, not yet. Last time I started writing a dramatic love story, but I decided that I hated the characters and so I started writing about Sam and Steve the anteater. This one’s starting out with…well, I don’t really have any idea. You know what they say, though. ‘I haven’t lost the plot, I never had one’? Well I’ve discovered that it’s easier to write when you kind of know where you sort of want to start things going. And then you have a plot to loose. But I don’t have a plot.”

“So what are you doing?”

“I’m trying to come up with one.”

“Any good ideas?”

“Uh, ‘Cyborg girl’s boyfriend dies in car accident and she starts fighting crime’? ‘Psychic AP Bio student struggles with daily life’? I might just do a script form of NaNo.”

“I thought your NaNo had no plot.”

“Well it didn’t. But that doesn’t mean that I can’t turn it into a script.”

“Do you even know how to write a script?”

“There are programs that do 90% of the formatting for you. And look at this lovely writing. It’s just me and a voice behind me talking.”
“Yeah. Only I’m not behind you. I’m in your mind!”

Oh shit. The anteater’s back to get me.
