A poem about eyes looking out on the world.

No matter what they see they never change. Eyes are the only part of the body that does not grow from infancy.

Yet they see and express so much.

Dedicated to my saviour whose eyes make such loving contact with mine.

These eyes

These are the same eyes that I had a child
The same ones I was born with
Hazel green looks out at the world
Greying lashes now blink away the tears

So much these eyes have seen
So much pain, so much joy
So much hate, so much war
So much love so much tenderness

A million images they have seen
Some I will treasure forever
Some I wish I could forget
Some I still want to see

These eyes have cried for joy
These eyes have cried for love
These eyes have cried for tenderness
These eyes have cried for comfort

These eyes have seen births
These eyes have seen gentle passing
These eyes have seen coffins
These eyes have seen dead friends

How can eyes stay the same?
After they have seen so much?
After a lover has gently kissed them?
After a Saviour has dried the tears?

These eyes have seen a new day dawning
These eyes have seen the sky on fire
These eyes have seen planets falling
These eyes have seen new worlds being born

These eyes have fallen in love
These eyes have broken hearts
These eyes have melted hearts
These eyes have mended broken hearts

Who do you see when you look in my eyes?
Who is it looking back at you?
Who makes the connection with your eyes?
Who does not look away?

Do you see a lover?
Do you see a friend?
Do you see an enemy?
Do you see another man?

These eyes open into my soul
These eyes tell you more than words
These eyes sing for you
These eyes long for you.
