If the doorbell had rung last Tuesday, perhaps things would have turned out differently, but the doorbell rang today and I opened the door without looking because I was late for…my sister’s wedding. This turned out to be a big mistake. When I opened the door I saw a guy who was gorgeous in all aspects except for one. He was holding a gun.

Pushing me up against the wall he said to me, “I need you to go upstairs and find the best hiding spot that you can. Once you do, do not for any reason whatsoever get up until I come find you. Got it?” He breathed into my ear.

He smelled of smoke and danger and I wasn’t willing to tell him that I didn’t get it. I really didn’t. I had no idea why this man was in my house trying to get me to play some sick game of Hide-and-Go-Seek while holding a gun to my head. But I nodded like a good little hostage and stumbled up the stairs, taking them two at a time.

I needed to find a phone.

I needed to call 911.

I needed to get the hell out of that house before I got shot!

But I never got to do any of these things before I heard someone yelling. Two people actually.

“Where is she?!” A deep voice said, drifting up the stairs.

I froze.

“I have no idea what you’re talking about.” Said the man who had told me to hide.

“That’s a filthy lie! She is here, I know it! I can sense her.”

Sense me? I felt myself shaking when I didn’t hear anymore talking. Where had they gone? Did they leave? Was it safe? Questions were racing through my mind distracting me from the one I really wanted to answer. Who were these people and what the hell did they want from me? I knew that I needed to find somewhere to hide but I couldn’t think straight and I couldn’t breathe and then, before I even had time to react, I couldn’t move for someone had their hand on my shoulder.

“AHHH!!!” I screamed, finally finding the lungs that used to belt out AC/DC with my dad, on late-night drives.

A hand was clapped over my mouth and I struggled to wriggle out of their iron grasp, but it was to no avail.

“Put her down Jay.”

“Kill yourself first.” Said the man who clutching me in front of him, who I assumed was Jay.

“In your dreams,” replied Hide-and-Go-Seek guy. He looked at me as I sent him a frightened look. He only responded with a stone-cold poker face and turning his gun to point toward me.

“I’ll kill her.”

I tried to scream but I think it came out as more of a muffled cry.

“You wouldn’t do that,” Said Jay, “You and I both know that there is too much at stake here.”

“I know nothing!” I saw his hand grip the gun and his fingers pull the trigger.

One second passed and all I could was that I was going to die.

Two Seconds and I knew that my mother would have to find my cold, lifeless body lying on the cheap apartment carpet.

Three Seconds and I was forced to reconsider my outlook on dying. Maybe Death wouldn’t be so bad

Four seconds, just think, I would never have to pay another gas bill ever again!

Five Seconds finally went by as I accepted my fate. I would never get to see my sister’s wedding, I would never find a better job than the one I had working at Nacho John’s, I would never fall in love, I would never have kids, I would never grow old. That second was filled with a lot of “nevers”.

I felt myself falling towards the ground, felt someone falling on top of me.

“Need a hand?”

I looked at him bewildered. What had just happened?

The guy knelt down and pushed someone off of me and helped me to my feet. Enveloping my small hands within his.

I was still too shocked to move so I just stood there, letting him hold my limp hands in his as I stared at the guy I thought just killed me.

“So that was the best hiding spot you could find?” He asked me, a smirk finding its way around his lips and onto his tanned face.
