I want people to know that I did not post this with the intention of offending anyone. This is not really a rant, it is simply something I put together for you all. I've seen other posts similar to this, and I thought I'd give it a try. Thank you for your time! :)

14 Annoying Booksie Experiences

I have been on Booksie since I was thirteen, and I am fifteen now, so as you can see, I've been on here for quite some time now. I love Booksie so much, and I definitely do not regret joining this wonderful community of writers! I've been through many ups and downs, and I thought I'd write about it for a change. I've seen others post stuff like this, and I've read them, but some are judgemental and they attacked people for their "horrible" grammar and for the genres they wrote in. In this article, I didn't write about those "annoying" experiences. This is NOT meant to be offensive, and I'll probably mention that a million times. This is more like a little guide to new members about how to not be annoying on Booksie. Enjoy! :)

1. Reading requests left on work

Some people don't really see this as much of a big deal, but for me, it's a BIG DEAL. I mean, they made the comments section for one purpose – to give feedback. Then the author reads it and is like “Yay people read my story,” but then there's the comments that say “Great job, can you check out my works?”

The comments section is there to leave feedback, not to advertise. How is saying, “Check out my works” helpful in any way? It especially gets my blood boiling when their comments toward your work are super short, like “Great job,” or “I like it.” I'm pretty sure if you actually read my works, you'd have a lot more to say than just that. I totally understand that some people are new, and are still trying to get used to Booksie, but if you've been here for years... *sigh*

2. Ignoring reading requests

To me, I don't consider this a big deal. I understand that some people just don't accept reading requests, and I'm cool with that. But then there's the people who receive your reading request, and instead of reading your story, they shoot a request right back. So you read their works, and then you NEVER HEAR FROM THEM AGAIN. That deserves a series of “???????????????” Obviously you saw the request, and you make it obvious on your profile that you accept reading requests, but ignore mine? I get it if it's not your genre, but this happens to me ALL THE TIME. Please people, it would be greatly appreciated if you don't just leave me hanging around and waiting for your comments.

3. Random fanning/fanning because they want you to read their stuff

Right away, that sounds a little harsh, doesn't it? I have actually gotten a fan request from someone, and their message was literally (no lie) “Random fanning!” I only joined Booksie like a month earlier, so when I saw it, I was like “Yay, another fan!” Now I wonder why I accepted that. I've also had two or three people fan me and then ask me to check out their works, when they haven't even read mine! I, um, like to say that my fans are people who like my works, but a lot of the ones I got at the beginning were reading requests that I gladly accepted. Not anymore, guys. DON'T DO IT!!! xD

4. Demanding requests

I hate these. “Read my poems, leave a comment.” “Check out my works.” “Read my story and tell me what you think.” “I have a new story up, read it and give me feedback.” God, nothing like DEMANDING me to read it. I like the reading requests that sound sweet, like, “Hi lovely! I have a new story up and I would appreciate it if you could check it out and leave your opinion.” Yes, I'll read it. But guys, don't be so demanding, you're gonna make me cry.

5. “It was good” comments

When I get comments like these, how am I supposed to know you actually read the story? I like the comments that tell me their favourite part of the story, or tell me what I should improve, because I KNOW you've read it. Or maybe you didn't like the story at all, and put “Good job!” so I wouldn't lose my shit on you. But I won't. Don't be shy, guys. If you don't like my story, I want you to tell me! Not all comments on Booksie have to include praise. But if you haven't read it, don't bother commenting or sending me a reading request. I was guilty of these short comments when I first joined Booksie, but I gradually realized that people were probably annoyed with me and wanted to know why I liked it.

6. When people say they'll return the favour, so you leave a request and they don't

This has actually happened a lot while on Booksie. If you say you'll return the favour, DO IT (See, I'm being demanding). xD But really, if you promise to do something, you should probably do it. If you won't return the favour, then don't include it in your reading request man!

7. Requesting a kajillion works all in one reading request

If you send me a reading request, I'd rather it be one or two things, not a thousand. Sometimes, people's requests sound a little like this:

“Hi! I would really appreciate it if you could check out my poems ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, and ____. It would also really make me happy if you could check out my short stories ____________, ______________, ___________, and ___________. Oh, and I have a few novels up called __________, ________________________, and _________________. The first novel has seven chapters, the second novel has twenty one chapters, and the third novel has eighteen chapters. Thank you if you decide to read!”

HOLY SHIT SLOW DOWN! I can't read all of them! LOL! Please, only request one or two things to read, I barely have enough time to get to reading requests as it is.

8. Updating me on novels I'm not reading

This is probably one of the most annoying things that goes on on here. Luckily, it hasn't really happened recently, but it used to happen all the damn time when I first got Booksie. Sometimes I get updates on novels I have never read (even the prologue or first chapter), and I just sort of wonder where you found me.

9. When you read the first chapter of a novel without saying KMU, and the next day you get a request saying “Chapter 25 of my novel is up!”

Well, I mean, I have no time to read all of that at once. If I wanted to, I would have said KMU, but I didn't. That's not meant to be rude, it's just that I either don't have enough time or I simply wasn't interested in the story. If I didn't read past the first chapter, I definitely can't get to chapter 25 in thirty seconds. So like I said in the point above...if I didn't say KMU, don't KMU!

10. When someone says KMU on your novel and when you update them, you never hear from them again

Whenever this happens, I'm always like “I THOUGHT WE HAD SOMETHING SPECIAL!!!!!” If you have no time to read on, I'm fine with it as long as you tell me, because I hate to be annoying and keep updating people if they're just ignoring it. If you don't want to read on, then simply don't say KMU! When I update people, I actually want them to read the newest update.

11. “Fan me and I'll return the favour.”

Some people are fine with this, and I won't go into complaining about others because it's none of my business. Personally, I don't like when this happens to me. If I like your work, I'll fan you, but for the love of God, DON'T FAN ME BACK UNLESS YOU'VE READ AND ACTUALLY ENJOYED MY WORKS! I've probably mentioned this already, but I like to have fans that are dedicated, not fans that have never read anything of mine and only fanned me because I fanned them. And if you fan me first, I won't fan you back. If I like your works, I would have already fanned you, or I will get to fanning you xD

12. When you clearly state “Reading requests are closed” on your profile, and suddenly you have way more requests than you've ever had

Okay, so if you really want to leave a reading request on my profile, you might want to read my profile first. Especially if it's clearly stated in huge red letters across the top of my page that requests are CLOSED, that does not mean they're open! Here's a little story: last year during exams, I put that at the top of my profile, and suddenly I was bombarded with a gazillion more reading requests than before I posted it. Personally, I take the time to read people's profiles before I shoot away at requests so then I know I'm not hitting them up at the wrong time, but a lot of people don't, and it pisses me off sometimes. So PLEASE, if you're about to kill me with requests, read my profile to see if requests are open! If they're closed, chances are I'll ignore your request.

13. When you don't get as much reads and comments because your story isn't romance

Some people are hardcore romance fans, and I won't judge you for that, because I have nothing against romance. But the thing that annoys me is that the only way I'll get a ton of reads is if my stories are romance. I only write romance if it's for contests (and let me tell you, I'm absolutely terrible at writing romance stories), and when I'd come on the day after posting it to check how much reads, I'd have more than twenty, without sending requests. In fact, one of my Valentine's Day stories broke my record for reads and comments on a short story, with 48 comments and almost 200 reads! Of course, I'm especially grateful for that, and want to thank every single person who read it, but I seriously hate that any other time I post something that isn't romance, I'll come on the day after posting it and see, like, three reads without sending requests. Like yeah, I understand if what I've posted isn't your thing, but stuff like this annoys me to the core.

14. When others compare their writing to yours

Sometimes when I get a comment, the person will tell me that they loved the story, and that, of course, always makes me smile. But I really don't like when people compare their pieces to mine. “This was such a heartwarming story, perhaps you'd enjoy my story _____?” “I loved this story, it's just like my story _____.” “This is great, I think you might like my story __________.” That's basically hinting at me to go and check it out, without technically being a reading request. So please, don't compare your writing to mine, because it makes me feel like you're trying to tell me I must read your story that is similar to mine.

Author's note: I really want to apologize if I offended anyone. I hope I didn't! I hope this was helpful to you, and it's okay if you're guilty of any of these. There's always room to fix things :) So like the other similar posts, I didn't rant about grammar and genres because it's none of my business, and author's should be themselves and write what they want to write. They'll eventually get better with grammar, too. So I hope you enjoyed this, and maybe even got a little laugh. Feel free to comment with any concerns, just please, don't be rude about it! Like I mentioned before, I wasn't trying to be rude by posting this article, I just hoped this would help anyone who doesn't want to be annoying on Booksie. Thank you for taking the time to read this, I really appreciate it! :D

Your apology wasn't really necessary, Brianna. Your 14 points were well taken and, as I read them, I reflected that I was guilty of a couple of them. If I might be forgiven, I'd like to add one more to your list: Posting 24 chapters at once - which ends up as 24 emails in my Inbox. I just don't have the time to read all 24 of them and usually end up shelving the next one in line and getting back to it in my own time. You go, girl. As I used to say "right on"!

Thank you so much for reading Tom! I can admit I was guilty of a few of them too, and you're forgiven :) I'm happy to hear you enjoyed this too :)

Wow, I agree with more than half of these and I dont think I'm guilty of any of them, well maybe the short comment thing.....but other than that I think I'm doing a good job at not being annoying :p. I really enjoyed this article and laughed at a few parts like "I thought we had something special!" ~Poetic

Lol no worries, you're not annoying at all :) I'm really glad you like this, thank you for reading!

UGH, I get the fan one all the time. I once got a fan request from someone and it said 'please read my work and help me get more people'. I was like SAY WHAT?! Anyway, a really good list. Hopefully these writers will learn in their own time...xD :D ~Stay Strong, Skye. X .

Mon, December 8th, 2014 7:32pm

I've gotten that about three or four times, I absolutely HATE it when people fan me for no reason or send me requests. Thank you so much for reading Skye, I'm really happy you enjoyed this :)

Mon, December 8th, 2014 5:21pm

I agree with the whole list. After reading this I'm going to keep track on who's profile I will give a request! Thanks :) Xo, Beth

Thank you :)

Lol! I have only been on here a little time but I have experienced almost all of those. The one that made me laugh was number 12. I thought that one was just funny and totally agree with it. It is so annoying! I am so glad you published it! Defintly funny!

Sun, December 21st, 2014 9:42pm

Thank you so much! I'm pretty sure probably everybody has experienced at least one of these, no matter how long they've been on Booksie xD I'm really glad to hear you like this, thanks a million for taking the time to read :)

I love it, your completely honest and I experienced many of these problems on an old website I use to use :)

Fri, January 2nd, 2015 7:51pm

Thank you so much :) I'm glad you could relate xD

Fri, January 2nd, 2015 3:11pm

This is a great list, one everybody would agree with during their time on Booksie!!!Great job at being so honest as well :)Keep up the good work. A "like. "FRom me :)

Thank you Chrissy! I'm glad you could relate :D

Interesting list. A few of the things were nicely outspoken, and I have to fullheartedly agree on the "You don't get reads if it ain't Romance" one. It's such a shame it's the most bloated genre on the website, since there's some really awesome books here that belong to other genres that don't get as much attention.
If there is anything I haven't seen in this list, it's that when people ask for criticism and feedback in their reading requests, yet delete any form of criticism once it is actually delivered. But that's just my two cents. Again, nice list!

Thu, January 8th, 2015 1:24pm

I have noticed the whole criticism part too xD And I honestly hate when I don't get a lot of reads because it isn't romance, there are some really amazing stories here that have only a few reads and comments because it's of a different genre. Thank you so much for reading, I'm happy to see you enjoyed and could relate :)

HAHA! XD This actually made me laugh because of how true it is lol. I completely agree with #13. Even though I LOVE writing Romance, sometimes I like to write other genres, but they barely get read which is so annoying. And OMG #4 is SO true! Someone once demanded me for a request and because I didn't follow through with their "demand" they left me another one which annoyed the hell outta me. Damn. Another annoying Booksie experience would be "when Booksie decides your comment isn't worth it and decides to cut half of it off" LOL XD I really hope this doesn't happen to me now :P This was such a good read and so unbelievably true. Keep it up, Brianna! A MASSIVE LIKE from me :3 - Ikky

OMG I so agree with that! I hate when my comment gets cut off! Lol the other day I got a fan request from someone who has never read my work, and the message in it said "Please fan me also" I was like WTF!!! I have also gotten a lot of people who have sent me another demanding request when I didn't get around to the first one, which makes me want to hit myself in the head repeatedly. Haha thank you for reading Ikky! I'm really glad to hear you enjoyed and could relate :P

This is hysterical. I can definitely relate to a few of these complaints. Haha. Well done.

LOL thank you so much :)

I agree with you SO much, Brianna. 10000% Number One; yes, I hate that. It's rude, very unprofessional and downright offensive. Number Two - This literally drives me up the wall. When I say "I'll return the favour", I mean it, yet they just send me something of theirs. Too bad, it will instantly be ignored, lol. Number Three - Haha, I always sicken them. I let them fan me, but I never fan anyone unless they get along with me or read my stuff :P Number Four - Lol, I just ignore them XD Number Five - HOLY CRAP. I HATE THOSE. Don't you just want to smash your laptop? It's what drives me away from this site, just crappy comments like that -_- I never read their stuff, and if I do, I give them a taste of their own medicine. Number Six - Sadly, I'm used to this by now :( But, I still request anyway. Number Seven - I have no words, it's just so unprofessional XD Number Eight - Yup, just as irritating. Number Nine - I'm just like "hey, hey you... feck off XD" Number Ten - I really relate to you on that one. It's actually quite upsetting, really. You think you've got a few followers in and then BOOM. They've disappeared completely -_- Number Eleven - Lol, I just wait a while to see what their next move is XD Number Twelve - I've never had this experience, but it probably is really annoying. Just play cool and ignore them ;) Number Thirteen - I hate romance. Hate it. Unless it's blended with something else. I really relate to you. I never write full-on romance, so I guess that's why I struggle to get some honest views. How pathetic of some people :s Number Fourteen - Yes, I get that ALL the time. Some people even downgrade my novels just because it isn't something THEY occasionally read or write, so they think it's crap -.- Haha, this was a good article. I've done things like this before, as well, but my God, the HATE on one o_O Haha, I liked this, it was certainly true to all those ignorant peeps out there. Well done :D

YES, any reading requests left on work I find is totally rude and just a way to fish for reads. It's like they think that if they leave it on my bio I won't see it, but obviously I will xD As for fanning, I like having fans that will actually read my works, not fan me because they think I'll read their stuff. It's really not fair. There was one time where I read someone's chapter and left a comment, then the person kept me updated for like 13 chapters when I didn't say KMU, and then deleted my reading request and fanned me. I was like "Oh hell no" xD And I agree, I hate when people say KMU on my novel but never continue. It's like they got your hopes up for nothing. People who downgrade novels just because it's not their cup of tea would annoy me, although I've personally never experienced that. I don't particularly like romance, but I just hate the lack of reads you get when it isn't of that genre, lol. Thank you so much for reading, I'm really happy to hear you enjoyed this and could relate to the majority of them :D

When I meant, "done things like this before" I meant that I've wrote articles and stuff, too on what I dislike about Booksie, lol XD Didn't wanna send the wrong message out :P

Sat, August 15th, 2015 2:18am

Lol that's okay xD I didn't take it the wrong way, don't worry :P

Fri, August 14th, 2015 8:19pm

Haha! Spot on, Brianna :) Three years have passed, and nothing really changed ;-) But... it's Booksie! And it's full of Booksians, whom we all know and love :)

Mon, October 2nd, 2017 7:24am

True xD The one thing that changed for me was that luckily people don't update me on novels I've never read anymore, lol. Booksie will likely stay like that for many more years to come, but in a way it makes us grateful for the community we have :)
