Maya

The colors ran off Maya’s hands staining the sink terracotta red, sunflower yellow, and burnt umber. She wiped the last traces of pigment from her fingers and packed up her pastels in the case her mother gave her. Her unfinished drawing sat on the easel illuminated by the late afternoon sun. Four figures stood in a desert: an old woman with her greying hair in a bun, a young woman with warm dark eyes, and a teenage girl with pale brown hair. The last was an unfinished picture of herself. Her eyes were full of longing and memory. The building was closing but she could not resist adding the last few strokes to her work.

A sudden blast of wind stormed through slamming the door and rattling the window. With a bang the room was empty. When Maya opened her eyes she was standing in a surreal red-sand desert. Off in the distance three figures stood. She picked up a stone from the ground and it disintegrated into flecks of paint. Maya felt a tap on her shoulder. She panicked and turned to see a young man standing in front of her.She knew he would be back but she needed more time. The man had an unsettling grin when he spoke “Time is up.I promised you more time and you got it.”

“No its not enough I lost Grandmother.I left Layla behind. I’m not losing Mom.”

“You made your deal.I gave you your miracle.Three months more is all that was promised. Besides if I take any more time you wont make it to thirty.”

“Take it. Take all my time if you have to. Just let her live!” Maya pleaded.

“I cant do that, she’s going to die anyway. How about I give you an hour. Then you can say your goodbyes.”

“Ill do it.” Maya held out her hand and the man took it. She grimaced as a sliver of pain raced through her arm.

“Time to go.You better hurry.” the man said with a sinister laugh.

The moment Maya found herself in the studio she biked to the hospital as fast as she could. she ran to her mothers room where the nurses and doctors had already began to swarm. She could hear the beeps of the machine fading. She rushed to her mother’s side.

“Please don't go!Please Mom.Please!I need more time!Just one more miracle! Just one more!”

In the back of her mind all she could hear was the miracle is over.
