I saw the Angel take up mighty arms
And stand before the man whom I was hunting
Then turn with flaming judgement-sword in hand
And strike down both the men who stood beside me
And as the mighty Servant turned to me
I felt inside my heart such dread conviction
For I was on one side, and He the other
And Heaven’s Scourge himself would strike me down
I followed man and country to the limit
And never noticed where the line was crossed
But here a side, and He was on the other
And Heaven’s Warrior would strike me down
They oft declared that God was on our side
And that these others had trespassed against him
But here himself, the Angel of the Lord
And here the fiery blade to strike me down
The flaming sword of Judgement falling now
And those who led me, nowhere to be called on
But there he stood, the man that I was hunting
And there, the Sword of God to strike me down.
