Some nightmares come and go, vanishing with the morning mists. Others return time and again, rising like wraiths in the antechamber of the mind, shattering our peace, draping us with a lifelong shadow.

It felt like a disaster movie, the instant before the screaming stops and the dark waters close above the wreckage.

I was trapped in a room with a wooden floor that bucked and swayed like a living thing.

The people were shoving and screaming, their mouths swallowing their faces, turning them inside out, leaving a teetering knob of flesh to replace their former heads.

Suddenly the floor cracked like a thunderclap, flinging me off into space and cleaving open a hungry mouth that swallowed everything within its terrible reach.

I plunged into the dark void, gripped by a feeling of utter helplessness. My head and stomach traded spaces as I twisted through the air and my hands lunged wildly for solid ground.

People scratched desperate gashes into my flailing arms. Misshapen faces leered from the darkness and their mouths opened and let out a sound so mournful it seemed to stick a thorn into my heart.

Limp bodies poured down from the sky like rain, deepening my torment until my soul seemed to tear in two from the lunacy of multiplying horrors. In the twilight of my consciousness I heard myself screaming for mercy.

My fall was broken by two metal knobs, from which I now hung suspended in the air. They teemed with hundreds of staring eyes that shifted and bristled like maddened bees a thick-packed hive. I recoiled in horror as one knob stretched to an impossible length, becoming a single eye that seemed to grin at my failing grip...
