Author’s note: This scene is based on characters and events from my novel, Before It’s Too Late. If this scene were in a show, I imagine it would be at the end of the first act, the curtain closing after the song finishes. Just a brief bit of background for anyone who hasn’t read the novel: At this point, LILY and GABRIEL have begun to develop feelings for each other. However, neither of them knows what to do about it. CARLA picks up on their chemistry and attempts to play matchmaker with the help of her friend SAM. SAM is secretly in love with CARLA. JOANNE (who is not in the scene until the very end) is a lesbian struggling with her identity. The song I chose was "Somebody to Love” by Queen Anyway, enjoy and tell me what you think!

(The setting is a school courtyard; the time is midday, perhaps lunch. Three picnic tables are spaced evenly across the stage. On top of the center table sits LILY, a junior, dressed cutely but conspicuously in bright colors with a flower in her hair. She sits daydreaming, smiling a bit to herself. CARLA, dressed a bit revealing in mostly black, enters L and joins LILY at the table.)
LILY: (dreamily) Did you see that?
CARLA: See what?
LILY: Gabriel! Last period- I dropped my pencil- and he picked it up for me!
LILY: So?! That was really sweet, not everyone would do that you know.
CARLA: (pausing) Sweetie... are you sure you don’t like him?
LILY: (a bit too emphatic) What? Car- no! Of course not! That’s crazy...
CARLA: Good, because apparently, he’s in love with me.
(LILY’s smile quickly fades. She is clearly horrified, but is trying not to let it show. She looks away from CARLA, at a loss for words.)
CARLA: (unhappily) Yup, he asked me out. We’re going to a movie on Saturday.
LILY: (panicking) But you don’t like him, do you? I mean... I thought... Why? You shouldn’t-
CARLA: What if he rapes me?
LILY: (caught off-guard, still struggling with words) What? No! I mean... he wouldn’t... why would he... no, he-
CARLA: Come with me.
LILY: What? Where?
CARLA: Come with us! You could protect me. It would be so awkward if it were just the two of us.
LILY: (instantly brightening) Really? Of course I would- (then coming to her senses) No, I can’t. If he... (pause)... likes you, then he wouldn’t want me there... to ruin it for him...
CARLA: (thinking fast) Well... um... how about this? I’ll invite Sam, too, and maybe Joanne and Nick or somebody- it’ll be like an outing with friends. (LILY is incredulous) Please, Lily, I need you there!
LILY: (still confused and disturbed) Fine. But I still don’t understand why you even said yes if you didn’t really like –
CARLA: Lily, you’re the best! I owe you.
LILY: (under her breath) You sure do.
(CARLA dashes L to meet GABRIEL, who has just entered, leaving LILY, distraught and nearly in tears, alone. They talk Downstage L)
CARLA: I did it, she’s coming Saturday. Katz- I swear to god, if you don’t ask her then...
GABRIEL: Look- I promise I’ll try! But what if she says no? You don’t understand how terrifying this is!
CARLA: (after a pause) She really doesn’t deserve you. (vaguely threatening) You know... I could always find her some other guy...
GABRIEL: Fine! Ok, I’ll do it!
(CARLA pats him hard on the back. He continues crossing R, pausing for a moment when he sees LILY, but his fear gets the best of him and he hurries past, taking his place Downstage R. Lily gazes after him, even more upset. She gets up and goes to her own place Downstage L. Meanwhile, CARLA has turned back to Center to greet SAM, who has entered from Upstage. They speak Downstage Center.)
CARLA: Sam, its working, I told you it would!
GABRIEL: (to himself) This will never work!
LILY: (to herself) Why did I ever think this could work?
CARLA: They’re totally in love!
GABRIEL: She’d never love me.
LILY: He’s in love with Carla!
SAM: Are you sure? I just saw Lily; she looks bad. like she wants to kill herself.
CARLA: Don’t be silly.
LILY: I should just kill myself and get it over with!
CARLA: She’ll be fine... (reconsidering)... eventually.
SAM: (slowly) Listen, Car- I’ve been thinking... all of this love business...
LILY: (indignant) She doesn’t even like him! She’s going to break his heart!
GABRIEL: I can’t risk getting my heart broken!
CARLA: You’re feeling lonely, aren’t you?
SAM: (taking CARLA’s hand) Aren’t we all?
GABRIEL: God, why am I being so dramatic?
LILY: It isn’t the end of the world...
CARLA: (pulling her hand away) Then why don’t I find you some hot girl?
SAM: (deeply)  But I don’t want some girl... I want-
CARLA: (quickly, she is terrified of what he is about to say) I have to go.
(CARLA rushes upstage, leaving SAM alone, Center. She moves into the middle part of the stage, in the “window” between LILY and SAM, but further back. By this time, Joanne, who has moved into the opposite “window” between SAM and GABRIEL, and the rest of the company have begun to come onstage, gradually moving into their places for the song.)
SAM: (to himself, by this time, all the characters are in their own separate worlds) I don’t understand.
LILY: This makes no sense.
CARLA: He wants me to love him... I’ve never been the falling-in –love type...
SAM: But everything’s changed...
LILY: I just wish I had someone...
GABRIEL: Anyone! No, not anyone...
SAM: Carla...
LILY: Gabriel...
JOANNE: Anyone.
(Lights change, music begins)
Anybody find me somebody to love

Ooh, each morning I get up I die a little
Can barely stand on my feet
(Take a look at yourself) Take a look in the mirror and cry (and cry)
Lord what you're doing to me (yeah yeah)

I have spent all my years in believing you
But I just can't get no relief, Lord!

Somebody (somebody)
ooh somebody (somebody)

Can anybody find me somebody to love ?
I work hard (he works hard) every day of my life
I work till I ache in my bones
At the end (at the end of the day)
I take home my hard earned pay all on my own

I get down (down) on my knees (knees)
And I start to pray
Till the tears run down from my eyes
Lord somebody (somebody), ooh somebody
(Please) Can anybody find me somebody to love ?

(He works hard)
Everyday (everyday) - I try and I try and I try

But everybody wants to put me down
They say I'm going crazy
They say I got a lot of water in my brain

Ah, got no common sense
I got nobody left to believe in

Yeah yeah yeah yeah
Oh Lord
Ooh somebody - ooh somebody
Can anybody find me somebody to love ?
(Can anybody find me someone to love)

Got no feel, I got no rhythm
I just keep losing my beat (You just keep losing and losing)

I'm OK, I'm alright (he's alright - he's alright)
I ain't gonna face no defeat (yeah yeah)

I just gotta get out of this prison cell

One day (someday) I'm gonna be free, Lord!

Find me somebody to love (x 7)
Find me somebody to love love love
Find me somebody to love
Find me somebody to love somebody somebody somebody somebody
Somebody find me
Somebody find me somebody to love
Can anybody find me
Somebody to love?

(Find me somebody to love)
(Find me somebody to love)
Find me somebody, somebody (find me somebody to love) somebody, somebody to love
(Find me somebody to love)
Find me, find me, find me, find me, find me
Ooh - somebody to love
(Find me somebody to love)
(Find me somebody to love)
Find me, find me, find me somebody to love
(Find me somebody to love)
Anybody, anywhere, anybody find me somebody to love love love!
Wooo somebody find me, find me somebody to love!
(blackout, then curtain)
