It occurs at least one time in our life,  when we only seek to go to bed at night; where our biggest wishes are to lay unconscious wishing for a better tomorrow.

“I didn't want to wake up. I was having a much better time asleep. And that's really sad. It was almost like a reverse nightmare, like when you wake up from a nightmare you're so relieved. I woke up into a nightmare.” wrote Ned Vizzini.

Medical consultants haven't found a cure for clinical depression other than medication. Unfortunately, medication doesn't provide alternatives  to overcome these daily struggles. In fact, this gives them the illusions that their future relies in the hands of narcotics.

Medication cannot help each and every one of us. Our personal issues and circumstances vary and consequently cannot be treated in the same way. We need to acknowledge the many steps we need to take to fight our inner demons ; the ghost that is called depression.

“There are wounds that never show on the body that are deeper and more hurtful than anything that bleeds.” wrote Laurell K Hamilton.

Overcoming our struggles is a difficult task but it isn't impossible.  With the proper support system,  these are ten things that may help you face the demons of depression.

1. Keep your support system within arm's length at all times. Family members, friends and medical advisors will be a reliable and consistent source of help  . At first, they might not understand what you are going through nor do you understand where they are coming from. However, whenever you are feeling low, they will always be  there to lend a helping hand and to provide you with emotional and psychological support.

“That's the thing about depression: A human being can survive almost anything, as long as she sees the end in sight. But depression is so insidious, and it compounds daily, that it's impossible to ever see the end.”

2. Do the things you did before. It may be hard to obtain the strength to accomplish your goals but remember, there is nothing like a plain old hockey game in the parking lot with your friends. Physical activity lightens your mood and has been proven to distance yourself from your emotional breakdown for a period of time. Walk around the block, dance with your friends or even walk your dog to get a little bit of fresh air. In fact, studies show that a minimal of 30 minutes of exercise per day can be as effective as any chosen anti-depressant and can increase your energy levels significantly.

''Seek out the memories depression takes away and project them into the future. Be brave; be strong; take your pills. Exercise because it's good for you even if every step weighs a thousand pounds.'' said Andrew Solomon in his latest book.

3. Keep a journal - This method may sound blend, but gathering your accomplishments in writing and keeping count of every small positive gain. List your goals for the upcoming day and resort to alternatives to learn from your past mistakes. This motivation serves the purpose to acknowledge your strengths, your abilities and to keep applying them in your every day life.

4. Satisfy your every need and desire. Give yourself a gift or take time for yourself. Whether it may be spending a day at the spa, meeting up with your friends or contemplating your future, this method will increase your determination to move forward.

''What did I want to do with my life and who was I trying to become? That questioning planted a seed in me about what I could really do with my life and what was really important to me. It brought renewed energy and a sense of personal fulfillment. I had something positive to pay attention to.''

Forget about your on-going issues and focus on yourself . Contemplate new eating and sleeping habits, surround yourself with positive individuals and put an end to abusive behaviours. Look forward to the person you aspire to become.

5. Don't keep everything bottled up, communication is  key. Speak with your loved ones about your problems and provide an explanation on how they could possibly help you. As much  as they love you, they cannot estimate how deepen you are hurt nor what are the reasons behind it. Give them a chance to provide you with the proper help mechanisms. Otherwise, don't hesitate to obtain expert advice in moments of need. They will always be there to listen and to provide you with several new tools that may help you through the night.

“When you're lost in those woods, it sometimes takes you a while to realize that you are lost. For the longest time, you can convince yourself that you've just wandered off the path, that you'll find your way back to the trail ahead any moment now. Then night falls again and again, and you still have no idea where you are, and it's time to admit that you have bewildered yourself so far off the path that you don't even know from which direction the sun rises anymore.” wrote Elizabeth Gilbert.

6. Make yourself comfortable with others and most importantly yourself. Acquire and display things that reflect who you are and who you were. Accept your environment and  yourself as a whole. List things you like about yourself and post them on your mirror or your common area of choice.  Forget about your insecurities and start thinking about the things that make you ''you''.

7. Be open to  other alternatives such as psychology, animal therapy and mindfulness .These methods are always within your reach and  must be used at your advantage.  Distraction is the number one mechanism to cope against difficult circumstances. Distancing yourself temporarily from your issues can change how you will address the situation.

8. Acquire an object which you will be able to rely.  For example, a stress ball is a great way to dissipate anger. It's also a great tool to combat anxiety and to decrease emotional and physical tension. This tool can be taken everywhere and will be your number one resource to combat anxiety. Candles and scented objects are also very effective and therapeutic.

9.Create a list of procedures in emergencies. Listening to music, drawing, cleaning are all mechanisms you can look upon  to distance yourself from your struggles. Emergency phone numbers such as relatives, friends and your medical contacts should also be listed if deeper concerns arise.

10.Always stay positive. Remind yourself that others are living the same things you are or even worst . Remind yourself that there's another day, another journey to be pursued. Surround yourself with positive individuals and with those who supply constant admiration and support. Bounce back after a long day and look forward to the future. You shall accomplish everything you set your mind and your soul up to.

Depression is a state of mind that is different to overcome but with determination and with the rights tools , it can be accomplished. Great things are destined for each and every one of us, but sometimes we can't see it. Progress is not imminent,it is only reached one step at time. Find the things that keep you sane and that keep you whole. One step at a time, one day at a time, your new journey will star and lead to what we used to know as happiness.
