Momma Use to Sing to Me
I use to have nightmares when I was younger
I would wake in a cold sweat, gripped with fear
Screaming as loud as I could
My pillow would be saturated with tears
Momma would fumble towards my room
Charge through the door
Almost breaking her ankles
Because of all the toys on the floor
“What’s the matter baby?
Don’t cry. Momma’s here.”
She would gently gather me up on her lap
To her heart, she would hold me near
Easily she would rock
My hair she caressed
My head on her chest
She would take a deep breath
And I would here the angel sing…
He has the whole world in His hands
He has the whole world in His hands
He has the whole world in His hands
He has the whole world in His hands”
But it was Momma’s hands that I felt
Wrapping around me like my favorite cover
Comforting me
Showing me the love of a mother
She would hum
And I would listen
Listen until my eyelids became weights
And her voice became the cloud on which I drifted
I loved when Momma use to sing to me…..
