We stood there swaying to the music; your arms pull me close, holding me tight. Hands warm, comforting -- I close my eyes, taking in the moment. The sparkling chandeliers and soft lighting cast shadows across your face, lengthening your eyelashes. We dance together the people around us ghosts of our imagination; our steps are slow, lingering, intimate and I can’t help but be addicted to you. I’m hooked.

Those wishes on stars and prayers to a God I don’t believe in were worth it. We’re together, in one another’s arms. The fates have allowed it. And yet… it feels surreal, dream-like.

But I’m here, in your arms. In your arms, I’m safe. And even though we’ve only known each another for the length of this song, I feel like I’ve known you all my life. I can see our future together. That sparkle in your eyes tells me you can see it too. You can see us together on the beach hand in hand. You can see us in Venice, our house with the white picket fence… just the two of us.

I open my eyes. Your face is blurry. I blink. Everything is hazy, swirling. Colors begin to melt together, flowing and churning. What’s happening? Where are you? White patches of light flash before my eyes. The darkness is swallowing me. A strange emotion races through my veins and it hits me. This feeling of fear spikes through my body. I hear music, beats, beeping, noises… I need you.

I’m scared.

My eyelids flutter open. Sunlight streams through the break in the window curtains making a pattern across the wrinkled comforter.

BEEP. BEEP. BEEP.

A warm body beside me rolls over and the mattress dips under the weight. I hold my breath, a glimmer of hope in my eyes as I remember you and pray.
