A lot of people have the wrong idea about Puerto Rico. Many (well, the ones who know a little about the story) think we want to be part of the Union just because of the money. Many say we can't be a state because we're Latino, we speak Spanish, in other words... "inferior". Well, Puerto Rico never asked to be a state, in fact, Puerto Rico never asked to be invaded by the Americans back in 1898. We also didn't asked for their industries, their government, etc. They did what they wanted, how they wanted and when they wanted. Now that they left us with dept, they pretend we get out of it really quick, when this big mess began with them in the beginning. Honestly, I am not a statehood supporter; why would someone join an Union that doesn't respect your culture and nation? This poem is written in the perspective of Puerto Rico, as if it was a real person, breaking the oppressing chains the United States. But, I wrote it kind of vague so many of you could relate to it. It can be about a bad relationship, a bullying situation, etc. I hope you enjoy.

My heart is strong,
but my soul cries.
Just wanted to belong,
yet infected with your lies.

Heartbroken and tumbled down,
Victim of your constant blows.
You almost let me drown,
but it’ll be the last of your shows.

You turned my heart to stone;
now I wear the fearless skin.
Now my life anymore you own;
From now on I’ll always win.

Anymore you’ll get the best of me;
I’m big enough to stand tall.
I’ll be who I want to be;
You’ll never see me fall.

And though my heart is strong,
my soul will always remember,
those times you did me wrong,
just like a cold night of December.

But I’m done with this matrimony;
Now I’ll finally get my way.
Sick of being your colony;
It’s Independence Day.
