EXCERPT FROM A LECTURE ON SQUARENESS BY THE AUTHOR OF 'ROUNDNESS DEFINED'

"And now students, let our discussion focus on the square.  OK, it's got four sides, but what else can be said about it?  Unlike its cousin, the circle, it fails miserably at being curved.  What the hell is the problem here?  Does anyone have any ideas?  Yes...........?  No, you in the red shirt."

"Isn't it really just kind of the way you look at it?"

"What!!?  Sit down son, we're not in one of your liberal arts classes here.  This is science!  Have you got that?  OK, you, over there."

"Uh, well, when a set of right angles are arranged equidistant from a common central point, the resulting bisected lines are........"

"WRONG AGAIN!!!  Jesus!  What about you?  Yes, you in the second row."

"............it's a square...........right?"

"Brilliant!  Ladies and gentlemen--no, don't sit down, don't sit down-- is this the best that we can expect from sixty million years of evolution?  Alright, now sit!"
