Damien stood against the tree panting loudly…he couldn’t believe it…no…could he believe it? His medium length dirty blonde hair dripped with sweat as the little beads began to trickle down his bare chest. A muscular boy of 17 Damien was quite shocked by the situation he had just been put in… it seemed like forever ago that it had happened... as he sat down against the bare bark of the tree his jeans slumping into the cold brown mud of the ground he began to think… at the beginning of the month… how did he not recognize the signs?
His uncle jerry had hired him for the summer to work on his farm… not a hard task considering he worked with his friend at construction sites for most of the year; he was used to heavy lifting. When he had arrived early that Thursday morning on June the 9th he rubbed his calloused hands against his bloodshot eyes… true he was used to partying and getting up early…but daylight hadn’t even hit here yet…unlike back in the city…there it always seemed to be daylight early… he could still see a shimmer of silver in the sky as the final stars began to fade away. He gave a sigh as the taxi driver drove away…great his last chance of civilization…gone for the summer. He gave a big sigh as he picked up his black duffle bag and began to make his way down the dirty beaten dirt path towards the bright red farmhouse in the distance. It took him a good 15 minutes to walk to the farmhouse owing to how far out he had been before. He just couldn’t believe he had walked this long dirt path.
“Well,” he thought “I suppose it is good that I start having this heavy exercise”
He sighed once more as he knocked his calloused hands on the big brown door.
“Why morning sunshine!” a voice shouted behind him. He gave a startled jump as he turned too look around who it was. A tall 6 foot 5 inch man stood in front of him. More toned and more muscles may have been the reason that Damien forced his arms behind his back. The man stood there eyeing Damien with great interest as his curly black hair rustled in the wind.
“So you jerry’s nephew?” the man questioned.
“Yeah,” replied Damien pausing for a minute. “Name’s Damien, I’m here to work for the summer” he said as he offered his hand to the stranger. The stranger eyed him with curiosity and then replied
“Well get inside then I spec he might be waking up soon and he’ll have clothes and a job for ya”
“Oh yeah…s’pose he will… well…um…nice meeting you …um… what’s your name again?”
“Name’s jack, I’m your uncle’s farmhand but don’t be s’pectin any help from me… I work for your uncle plain and simple…also don’t spec any special treatment. We all the same here. So get inside before your uncle kills me for keeping you away too long” he finished as he smiled at Damien. Damien had a shiver go up his spine but simply dismissed it as the cold wet morning. He creaked open the golden knob and proceeded inside the house. As he entered he saw his uncle sitting at a table drinking some coffee. He ran over as he shouted
“Hey uncle jerry!”
“Ah Damien you’ve arrived! I trust you had a pleasant drive? Come here, come here! Give your uncle a hug!” he cried as Damien ran towards his open arms. Damien didn’t know why but he always felt so comfortable in his uncle’s warm fuzzy arms. Maybe it was because his uncle was like his father that wasn’t his father. Since his father was never home due to being a wealthy tycoon and traveling lots he just somehow became attached to his uncle even though he wasn’t around him that much. His uncle smiled at Damien’s fair complexion and then cried
“come , come I’ve got some work clothes for you to change into and then I must give you the grand tour of the farm before you start working…let’s just say this is your last day off kiddo” he told Damien giving him an extra big wink.
“Gee thanks uncle jerry!” truth be told Damien was very tired from the one hour boring, non fun taxi drive. He very much wanted to relax but knew how dedicated his uncle was to this farm and so he quickly changed and met his uncle outside the farmhouse. By now the sun was starting to lengthen its bright golden rays across the meadow. He never realized how awesomely beautiful it was out here. It made him appreciate his life a little more. His uncle led him away from the farmhouse and out towards the barn. He showed the brown skinned horses who were still resting and let Damien pet one of their blonde manes. Damien felt very close to the farm now as uncle jerry led him around the barn towards the silo and the 2nd barn. It contained cows and they were also currently resting in their stalls.
“Now jack usually feeds the cows but he’ll show you how to feed and cleanup after the horses,” his uncle let out a little snigger at these last few words “you’ll learn of the joys of horses later. Now if you are really good with the horses I might let you come here” he said as he opened baby blue doors into the chicken house “these chickens are very precious to me and they bring in most of my income as they have high quality eggs… now they just nest here but you’ll have to collect the eggs everyday… I usually do that or I’ll have Jack do it… if you get good enough you may just be able to do it before summer ends. Now… when we’re all finished with that for the day which will be around 3 o clock if were lucky we’ll go down to the vegetable patch and pick us some greens for the night. Supper will be ready by 6 and it’ll be prepared by me,” and as he said this Damien gave a grotesque look in his face. His uncle saw this face and quickly reprimanded him for it,
“And if you don’t like it you can get over it” he quickly added. And then with a shake of his hand he dismissed his nephew to go watch jack handle the horses. As he entered he saw jack with pitchfork lifting hay into each of the horses feeding stalls while little sweat beads trickled down his bare back. Damien had not expected this and gave a startled yelp as he walked in.
“Well good morning to you too” Jack grunted as he smirked remarking on the pitiful way Damien looked in that shirt and those jeans and boots, “city boys just aint made for farm work” Jack added as he grinned a wide smile “tell ya what… ill show ya what the horses can really do!” he yelled at Damien as he threw a saddle right at him
“WHOA!” Damien cried as the saddle hit him hard in the chest, “Hey watch it mister! You can’t just throw crap everywhere!”
“Oh yeah?” jack laughed, “WATCH ME!” he playfully shouted as he threw a blanket at Damien. “You might want that, might get itchy for those skinny city boy legs” Jack taunted as he smirked a big smile. His pearly white teeth seemed to light up the depressing room Damien noticed and he then let his pride get the better of him
“Ha I bet my skinny city boy legs could beat you in a horse race any day!” Damien taunted back
“Oh really?” Jack replied smartly the color in his cheeks now beginning to flush “that sounds like a challenge to me city boy! So if I crush you in a race don’t go home crying to mommy” and then Jack in a fit of rage slammed the saddle against Damien’s chest once more. Damien grunted at the shear force at which Jack had thrust the saddle upon him. Even with Damien’s construction job and working out every day he was not nearly as strong as Jack was, he felt as if Jack himself could run his own in a horse race. He proceeded over to the horse he had petted earlier… it seemed to be in good shape and a stallion at that, surely it would have the energy needed to beat Jack.
He led it by the reins out to the emerald green pasture. The sun was now at the 12 o’clock position and its heat could not be more stunning. Damien then realized…he had no idea how to saddle up a horse. He eyed Jack cautiously when Jack had his back turned. Jack put the blanket on first and then strapped the saddle on his stallion. Damien clumsily tried to follow Jack’s pattern throwing the saddle on too hard a couple of time as the horse neighed and threw the saddle off. Damien was very wary of this stunning creature. Its legs looked very powerful and he had seen enough TV shows to see dumb guys who got kicked in the balls by horses. After about five attempts he finally got the saddle on and Jack who had been sitting on his horse for at least 15 minutes sighed heavily and cried
“Ha they really don’t teach you city boys anything up there, now that you’re all good and ready,” Jack smirked “we’ll start here…” as he pointed at the white fence “and …do a loop around that tree out there sitting by its lonesome and come back to the start…um…what you say to…winner gets the loser’s dessert tonight?”
“All right … you’re on!” Damien shouted confidently
“Have fun with no ice cream tonight city boy!” Jack winked as he approached the start line with his stallion. Damien followed him and brought his stallion to a standstill right next to Jack.
“Ready?” asked Jack
“Yep!” replied Damien
“GO!” Jack shouted as he kicked his stallion with his boots as his horse neighed and rushed off towards the tree in the distance. Damien proceeded to kick his horse against the thighs and his horse reared up and… Damien fell flat on his back off the horse as the horse rushed off towards the distance. Damien ran after it yelling
“COME BACK HERE YOU BIG STUPID HORSE!”
“HA!” Jack yelled triumphantly, “have fun at dinner tonight city boy!”
“But, but, but…” Damien stuttered as he quickly tried to think of a reason that this was unfair and they should do another challenge, but it was too late. Jack had already begun leading the horse back into the barn as Damien heard his uncle yelling in the distance,
“OK YOUR SHIFTS OVER DAMIEN AND JACK! COME AND HELP ME PICK VEGGIES FROM THE GARDEN AND WE’LL START DINNER!” and at these words Damien grunted and trudged off toward the back of the farmhouse. His uncle was waiting there with Jack who had a wide grin on his face. Uncle Jerry pointed towards the strawberry patch and said,
“I heard Jack beat you in a race!” his uncle snorted, “so since you won’t be having desert tonight you can pick the fruits for the desert! I’ll be over here helping Jack pick corn. If you need anything just shout” his uncle finished and proceeded over to the corn patch. Damien grunted and fell to his knees. He was still tired from the trip to the farm and his calloused hands began to pick at the crimson silky appearing strawberries.
That night after they had finished the corn and pork Damien watched in misery as the supple looking strawberry ice-cream dripped from Jack’s spoon onto his mouth. Damien got up downtrodden and started walking towards his room. He was lying in his bed when the door creaked open as Jack’s muscular body appeared at the door. Jack sighed almost embarrassed as he said “listen…city boy…I realize it ain’t quite fair that I…challenged you for your desert and well…” Jack paused his tan cheeks beginning to flush red as Damien still lying in his bed confused voiced angrily “What the HELL do you want? Spit it out!”
“I just…I came to give you some desert!” yelled Jack shoving the bowl of strawberry ice-cream into Damien’s hands and stormed out of the room apparently ticked off at Damien’s rudeness. Damien just shrugged it off assuming it was pent up anger from doing so much farm work in the sun. For three weeks Damien continued to work hard feeding the horse’s their hay and cleaning up their dark “after-matter”. His muscles began to grow and he grew a couple of inches from all the healthy food. One day his uncle decided to let him work in the chicken coops. His uncle came up to him saying “well you’ve done it! You’ve worked so hard that today you can work in the chicken coop!” Damien sighed at these words. The task would be easy and it would overall be fun. Jack saw Damien walking towards the chicken coop in the rain and slid in front of him making brown mud wash upon Damien’s jeans. Damien was about to yell at him when Jack interrupted “now , now sonny, I just want to make sure you don’t break any eggshells, maybe I should supervise you just this time!”
“But my uncle specifically gave me this task why do you think I always need help?”
“Because I was in your shoes one day along time ago, I just want to make sure you succeed” Jack winked at Damien smiling with his bright pearly teeth. Damien just shivered but slammed open the door to the coop loudly causing some of the chickens to squawk and jump. Damien didn’t want to be treated like a child and he just made it worse. Damien started to take the eggs roughly but jack just interrupted him “you’re doing it wrong, you need to be gentler, here let me show you” Jack said as he reached his arm over Damien’s guiding his hand to the egg, “there you see?”
“I don’t need your damn help!” said Damien blushing
“Don’t you ever learn city boy? Now shush your scaring the chickens”
“No! Don’t you ever learn country boy? Why do you think you’re so much better than me? I can do anything ten times better than you can!” Damien yelled causing more chickens to wake up and squawk. Jack just looked into Damien’s eyes harshly as he said “I’ll never understand city boys, but I’ll always understand you Damien” Jack whispered as he leaned in towards Damien causing Damien to drop the basket of eggs as Jack kissed Damien full on the mouth. Their pink lips touching as they kissed passionately Jack wrapped his arms around Damien’s waist pulling him in further. Then Damien screamed “what the HELL do you think your doing?!” said Damien as he punched Jack straight across the jaw. He ran straight towards the woods of the farm and slumped against a tree panting. What was wrong with him, why would, how could he have stopped that from happening?
