Growing up in my neighborhood there was this woman who was so beautiful. I was only 12yrs old and I had the biggest crush on her; I would watch as she would literally entrance anyone who was near her. I also remember year after year the men would be less and less. Until one night at a friends wedding I watched her as she was sitting alone. She looked so much older and unkempt, I did not know what her story was but I felt such empathy and I could not stop watching her. I wrote some on a napkin at the wedding and the rest when I got home that night. Written in 1996 hope you like it.

She holds the dances upside down

Says the music sounds funny as they spin around

Like a drowning clown.

She lays down and starts to laugh

looking at an old photograph

and the time that's past.

Where has it gone?

Where have I've been?

I lost my voice long ago

It's not like I had something to say

But I wished it went slow.

The rain starts to come inside

she sits in the corner until it subsides.

She waits for her ride...

She's all alone.

The rain is begining to freeze

biting winds

she no longer enjoys the breeze.

And all of those birds that have come to play

Have all flown away

Have all flown away

and the innocence in slow decay

has stained the days...

Stained the days to imprison the night

and turn away.

So she looks to escape through any door

life has shattered her bonds

striped her charms

and cut her arms.

So she can't hold on to anything

She tells me...

She's starting to feel old

So ugly

So cold

like a flickering light.

She gave everything with nothing to gain

A women dying of thirst in the pouring rain.

She spins around

she spins around.

Like the drowning clown.
