It seems to Brady that nothing will be able to heal his heart after Carly died, not even his own son. Will things get better for him? Will he finally be able to rest, safe and sound?

I hope this makes you smile. :)

Authors note:

For a change, I wanted to write a story that brought joy to someone. This story is a bit on the emotional side but hopefully, at the end it might make you smile. Hopefully.

If you are trying to deal with the loss of a loved one, you are not alone. There is always someone out there that you can talk to. I based this story of Taylor Swift's song 'Safe and Sound'. Enjoy.

When someone you love becomes a memory, the memory becomes a treasure ~ Anonymous

I sat in a hut. It was worn out from the heavy winds blowing it this way and that. I didn't even know why I was there. I thought I could have escaped everything and everyone, even my own son. But you can't escape your feelings. I knew I couldn't.

I met someone who I was going to spend the rest of my life with. That person was called Carly and she meant everything to me. I guess in life some things are never meant to be. I guess sometimes you just have to let go. But it's not that simple for me.

I don't think I will ever be able to let go.

"Daddy, I miss mummy. Where is she?" I sigh and pat Joshua's head.

"I've told you before buddy. Mummy's in a safe place." I point upwards. "She's in the magical heavens, remember?"

"Is she an angel now?"

"Yes, she is a beautiful angel who will look after you. Look after both of us."

"Will she give me sweeties?" I laugh and ruffle his head.

"You just be good boy."

"Na-Night daddy." I smile and turn the main light off and the night light on. Josh is scared of the dark.

"What are we sulking for little bud?" I ask Joshua over breakfast.

"Bored." Josh mumbles, sloping his porridge about.

"How about we go on a journey then?" His face lights up.

"Yeah!"

"But only if little Josh eats up all of his porridge..." All of a sudden, Josh starts to gobble down his breakfast at top speed, porridge going on the table and round his mouth. I laugh, standing up to get a cloth.

"Go easy little guy!"

"Where are we going daddy?" Josh asks me, placing his bowl in the sink on tiptoes.

"We are going...How about we go up to Devon? We can see Grandma as well as play on the beach!" I suggest. Josh jumps up and down excitedly and then runs to get dressed. He is so easy to please. Bless him.

I sit opposite Joshua, who was very excited to see the beach. I nod along with the rocking train and lean back, resting my head on the soft seat. It has been a long week, with my manager almost firing me, people feeling sorry for me and of course, the thought of Carly.

"Daddy, what are you thinking?" Josh interrupts my thoughts. I shift uncomfortably on my seat.

"I was thinking about your mummy Josh." I look at him and he looks at me, his big blue eyes. Just like Carly's.

"You never tell me about mummy." Joshua folds his arms. I sigh and smile at him and sit next to the seat beside him so I am no longer sitting opposite him. I am fed up of giving my son one worded answers or a bit of a sentence. He deserves the full story. I wrap an arm around him, pulling the small boy closer. "Your mummy was a very kind person my little buddy..." And then I tell him. I tell him how we first met, the funny times, our wedding day, when we had Joshua himself...And then the crash...And it feels so good to finally let it all out, to tell someone, to tell the truth for a change. And best of all, that truth was to my own son. My precious son who I will cherish for life.

"Yes there will be a bit of a delay. Sorry about that." Says the ticket man.

"No problem, how long though?" I ask, checking the time on my watch.

"Only about fifteen minutes or so." He pauses and smiles over at Josh who was playing with his blue bear. "A lovely boy you've got there." That's when I smile as well.

"I know."

"Just a father and son day out then?" I nod my head. I am not going to go into full detail about the death of Carly to some stranger.

"That's nice." He says and then pauses. I hear the sound of a train in the distance. "Looks like the train to Devon is on time after all!" He laughs and pats me on the back. Then he stops laughing and he looks me right in the eye. "It's not easy is it?" Suddenly, I feel a huge rush to my head and everything is spinning. Something isn't right. It should be right though. We are going to the seaside, just me and my son, it should be fine. Nothing to worry about. Everything is blurry but not blurry enough. I can still see the train coming into focus and the ticket man shouting at something, someone. I turn my head, trying to make out the small boy who has jumped onto the railway track. He has a soft blue bear in his hand. Josh.

"JOSH!" I yell as loud as I possibly can and sprint across the platform floor towards my son. The one thing I have left. I leap and grab his two shoulders and try to push him away from the fast train, creeping its way towards us...

Everything is quiet. And still. I'm holding something in my arms. Josh. He isn't bleeding, not a scratch. We survived I think. I turn around and jump as I see the most beautiful woman. She has blonde hair with natural highlights and the most gorgeous blue eyes. She lifts her hand and reaches towards me, smiling. She tells me to trust her, that everything will be alright now. I don't trust her at all, even though there is something familiar about her. Then she says a word, just one word that makes me trust her.

That word is Carly.
